The Federal Government has announced that Nigeria’s newly appointed ambassadors will resume duties in their countries of assignment in 2026, after completing all clearance and confirmation processes by the National Assembly. The government said the move is part of a broader effort to strengthen Nigeria’s foreign relations and improve the country’s image and influence abroad.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation made the announcement on Monday while briefing journalists at the end-of-year press conference in Abuja. According to him, the confirmation of the ambassadors by the National Assembly is a key step, and the remaining stages of the deployment process will be completed next year.

He explained that once the process is fully concluded, the ambassadors will be posted to their respective countries to represent Nigeria’s interests and deepen ties with host nations. The minister added that the government expects the ambassadors to officially assume duties in 2026.

“In 2026, our newly appointed ambassadors will take up their posts in their countries of assignment. Their clearance and confirmation have just been completed by the National Assembly,” the minister said.

He noted that the decision to appoint and deploy new ambassadors followed public calls for the restoration of full diplomatic representation in Nigeria’s foreign missions. According to him, many Nigerians at home and abroad had raised concerns about the absence of ambassadors in several countries, and the President acted to address those concerns.

The minister explained that while some parts of the deployment process have already been handled, others, such as final postings, briefings, and logistical arrangements, will be completed in 2025 to allow the ambassadors to resume work the following year.

He stressed that the posting of ambassadors is important for Nigeria’s diplomatic, economic, and security interests. According to him, ambassadors play a major role in promoting trade, attracting investment, supporting Nigerians in the diaspora, and strengthening cooperation with other countries.

Nigeria has one of the largest diplomatic networks in Africa, with embassies and high commissions across the world. Ambassadors are the highest-ranking representatives of the country in these missions and are responsible for managing relations between Nigeria and host countries.

In 2023, the Federal Government recalled many of Nigeria’s ambassadors as part of a review of the country’s foreign policy and diplomatic strategy. Since then, several missions have been led by chargés d’affaires, who manage day-to-day affairs but do not have the full authority of ambassadors.

The absence of substantive ambassadors in some countries led to concerns among stakeholders, including diplomats, business leaders, and members of the Nigerian community abroad. Many argued that the lack of ambassadors could weaken Nigeria’s voice in important international discussions and slow down efforts to attract foreign investment and support.

The government has said the new appointments are meant to address these concerns and reposition Nigeria on the global stage. The minister said the deployment of ambassadors will help Nigeria engage more effectively with other countries and international organisations.

He added that Nigeria’s foreign policy priorities include economic diplomacy, regional stability, and the protection of Nigerian citizens abroad. According to him, the ambassadors will be expected to work closely with host governments to promote trade, create opportunities for Nigerian businesses, and support government efforts to grow the economy.

Nigeria is Africa’s most populous country and one of its largest economies. It plays a key role in regional bodies such as the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the African Union. The country is also active in global organisations like the United Nations and the Commonwealth.

Diplomatic engagement is seen as important for Nigeria’s efforts to address security challenges, including terrorism and organised crime, as well as to attract international support for development projects. The government believes that having ambassadors in place will improve coordination and cooperation with partners in these areas.

The minister said the President is committed to ensuring that Nigeria’s foreign missions are properly staffed and equipped to carry out their duties. He added that the government is also working to improve the welfare and working conditions of diplomats and foreign service officers.

According to him, the appointment of ambassadors is not only about filling positions but also about ensuring that the right people are chosen to represent the country. He said the government expects the ambassadors to uphold professionalism and act in the best interest of Nigeria at all times.

He also noted that the confirmation by the National Assembly shows the importance of cooperation between the executive and legislative arms of government in foreign policy matters. The screening process, he said, helps to ensure that nominees are qualified and capable of handling the responsibilities of the office.

However, others have urged the government to ensure that the deployment process is completed without delay. They argue that Nigeria needs strong and active diplomacy, especially at a time when global competition for investment and influence is increasing.

The government has maintained that the phased approach is necessary to ensure a smooth and effective transition. According to the minister, the focus is on getting the process right rather than rushing it.
