The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has opened an investigation into the violent scenes that followed Nigeria’s 2–0 victory over Algeria at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) quarter-final in Marrakech, Morocco.
The match, played at the Grand Stade de Marrakech, ended in chaos after the final whistle as angry Algerian players and fans reacted to their team’s elimination from the tournament. Nigeria’s win secured the Super Eagles a place in the semi-finals of the competition.
According to Africa Soccer, CAF has begun reviewing reports from match officials, stadium security officers, and media representatives who were present during and after the game. The investigation is expected to focus on the conduct of players, officials, and supporters, as well as the overall security situation at the stadium.
Nigeria sealed the victory with two second-half goals from Victor Osimhen and Akor Adams. The goals broke Algeria’s resistance and ended their hopes of progressing further in the tournament. The Super Eagles put in a disciplined performance, especially in defence, to keep Algeria from scoring.
However, tensions rose sharply at full time. Algerian players were visibly angry and directed their frustration at the match officials. They accused the referee, Issa Sy from Senegal, of making unfair decisions during the game.
Reports said some Algerian players attempted to physically confront the referee and his assistants. Stadium security personnel had to quickly step in to shield the officials and escort them away from the pitch to prevent the situation from getting worse.
The unrest did not stop on the field. Algerian supporters in the stands also reacted angrily to the defeat. Witnesses said some fans tried to break through security barriers and caused damage to parts of the stadium. Security forces were deployed to restore order and prevent further destruction.
CAF’s investigation will look into all these incidents, including the actions of the players, the behaviour of fans, and whether security arrangements were adequate for such a high-profile match.
The clash came after days of growing tension around the fixture. Algeria had earlier complained about refereeing decisions in the tournament and had already submitted a petition to CAF following the match. The Algerian Football Federation accused the referee of bias and claimed their team was denied a clear penalty.
Nigeria, on the other hand, has maintained that the match was fairly officiated and that the Super Eagles deserved their win. Nigerian fans and football analysts have praised the team’s performance, pointing to their strong organisation and effective use of chances.
CAF has not yet announced any disciplinary action, but officials said all evidence would be carefully examined before a decision is made. Sanctions could range from fines and suspensions to stadium bans, depending on the findings.
Violence and crowd trouble have long been a concern at football matches across the continent, especially during major tournaments like AFCON. CAF has repeatedly warned teams and supporters against misconduct and has stressed the importance of fair play and respect for officials.
In recent years, CAF has introduced stricter rules and heavier penalties to discourage such behaviour. Teams can be punished for the actions of their players, officials, or supporters, even if the incidents happen after the match.
The Nigeria vs Algeria clash is one of the biggest matches of AFCON 2025 so far, given the history between both teams. Nigeria and Algeria are among Africa’s most successful football nations and have faced each other several times in important tournaments.
Algeria came into the competition as one of the favourites, while Nigeria has been growing in confidence with each match. The quarter-final victory has boosted hopes that the Super Eagles can go all the way and win the trophy.
For the Super Eagles, attention now turns to their semi-final match as they continue their quest for a fourth AFCON title. Team officials have urged players to remain focused and not be distracted by off-field issues.
Meanwhile, CAF’s handling of the investigation will be closely watched by fans, teams, and football officials across Africa. Many believe the outcome will send a strong message about discipline and safety at international matches.
