The Ebonyi State Police Command has confirmed the detention of some of its officers over the alleged killing of a motorcycle rider in Abakaliki, the state capital. The incident, which occurred late on the night of January 27, 2026, has sparked public concern and renewed calls for police professionalism and accountability in the state.

The fatal shooting happened at about 10:30 p.m. near Hariz Filling Station along the busy Abakaliki–Enugu highway, one of the major roads linking Ebonyi State with neighbouring Enugu State. The area is known for heavy traffic, especially at night, as it serves commuters, traders, and commercial motorcycle riders, popularly known as okada riders.

According to the police, operatives attached to the Central Police Station, Abakaliki, were on routine patrol around the Spera-in-Deo Flyover when they responded to a distress call. During the operation, one of the officers allegedly fired a gunshot into the air in what the police later described as an unprofessional action.

Tragically, the bullet struck a motorcycle rider identified as Nwanchor Uwaezuruike, a male commercial motorcyclist who was passing through the area at the time. He was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention. However, doctors later confirmed that he died from the gunshot injury.

SP Ukandu said the officers involved in the incident have been taken into custody, pending the outcome of a full investigation.

“Preliminary reports indicate that operatives of the Command attached to the Central Police Station, Abakaliki, while on routine patrol, responded to a distress call when one of the officers unprofessionally shot into the air,” the statement said.

“Regrettably, the bullet struck a motorcycle rider, identified as Nwanchor Uwaezuruike. He was rushed to the hospital for medical attention but was later confirmed dead.”

Following the incident, the Commissioner of Police in Ebonyi State ordered an immediate and comprehensive investigation. The statement said the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department (DC, SCID) has been directed to carry out a thorough, impartial, and professional probe into the matter.

The police leadership said the investigation would focus on establishing the exact circumstances that led to the shooting, identifying those directly responsible, and ensuring appropriate disciplinary and legal actions are taken.

The Commissioner of Police also expressed heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased and assured them that justice would be served.

“The Command sympathises deeply with the family of the deceased and assures them, as well as the general public, that the outcome of the investigation will be transparent and justice-driven,” the statement added.

The incident has drawn strong reactions from residents of Abakaliki, especially commercial motorcycle riders, who say they are often victims of harassment and unsafe conduct during security operations. Some riders described the killing as painful and avoidable, calling on the police to stop the practice of firing gunshots during routine patrols.

A fellow okada rider, who spoke anonymously, said, “This is very sad. We go out every day to struggle for food. To die like this because of a stray bullet is heartbreaking. Police should protect us, not put us in danger.”

Cases of accidental shootings by security personnel have continued to raise concern across Nigeria. In several states, civilians have lost their lives after being hit by stray bullets fired during patrols, checkpoints, or crowd control operations. Rights groups have repeatedly warned that firing into the air in public places is dangerous and against international policing standards.
