Wike Launches Majority FM to Support Tinubu’s 2027 Re-election Campaign in Rivers

    Share

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has established a new radio station in Rivers State to support the re-election campaign of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The radio station, named Majority FM 89.5, is located within the office of the Renewed Hope Ambassadors in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital. The development is part of growing political activities aimed at strengthening President Tinubu’s support base in the South-South region.

Sources close to the project said the station is expected to focus on political mobilisation, public awareness and promotion of the achievements and policies of the Tinubu-led administration. It will also serve as a platform to engage supporters and residents across Rivers State and neighbouring areas.

The launch of Majority FM comes at a time when political activities are gradually increasing nationwide, despite the 2027 elections still being over a year away. Political observers say early mobilisation has become common in Nigerian politics, especially among major political figures seeking to shape public opinion ahead of elections.

Nyesom Wike, a former Governor of Rivers State, is a key political figure in the South-South and remains influential in the region. Although he is a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Wike openly supported President Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) during the 2023 presidential election.

His appointment as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory by President Tinubu further strengthened his alliance with the ruling government and confirmed his role as a major political player beyond party lines.

The establishment of a radio station dedicated to campaign activities reflects the importance of media in Nigerian politics. Radio remains one of the most powerful tools for political communication, especially in areas where access to television and the internet may be limited.

Through radio, political messages can reach a wide audience, including rural communities, market traders and local residents who rely on radio for news and information.

The Renewed Hope Ambassadors, whose office houses the radio station, is a political support group aligned with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda. The group has been active in promoting government programmes and mobilising grassroots support for the administration.

Supporters of the initiative say the radio station will help educate the public on government policies, achievements and development plans, while also countering opposition narratives.

However, critics argue that the early start to campaign activities raises concerns about the misuse of public influence and political tension ahead of the official campaign period set by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Some opposition voices in Rivers State have also questioned the neutrality of political actors and called for fairness in the use of media platforms.

Despite the criticism, political analysts say the move highlights the strategic importance of Rivers State and the wider South-South region in national politics. The area has traditionally been a stronghold of the opposition, making it a key battleground for future elections.

President Tinubu, who assumed office in May 2023, has continued to push his Renewed Hope agenda, focusing on economic reforms, infrastructure development and governance. His administration has faced both praise and criticism over policies such as fuel subsidy removal and economic restructuring.

As preparations for the 2027 elections gradually take shape, political alliances and support structures are expected to become more visible across the country.
