Chaos erupted at the Fruit Market, Oil Mill, Rumuokwurusi in Port Harcourt on Saturday after a trader from Benue State was allegedly stabbed to death by a wheelbarrow pusher.

The victim, identified as Higightor Wenem, an indigene of Mbagel Village in Buruku Local Government Area of Benue State, was reportedly killed during a heated argument over space in the crowded market.

CSP Grace Iringe-Koko, spokesperson of the Rivers State Police Command, confirmed the incident in a statement. She explained that the trader asked the wheelbarrow pusher, Zakara Afaaruwu, to move his wheelbarrow, which was obstructing his goods.

The request was reportedly refused, and the disagreement escalated into violence. The suspect allegedly stabbed Wenem with a dagger, causing serious injuries.

The trader was rushed to the Military Hospital, but doctors pronounced him dead on arrival. “The suspect is currently in custody, and investigation is ongoing,” CSP Iringe-Koko said.

Port Harcourt markets, particularly those dealing with fresh produce, are often crowded and hectic, making disputes between traders and service providers a frequent occurrence.

Market observers say that conflicts between wheelbarrow pushers and traders are common due to limited space and high business activity. While most disagreements are resolved without incident, the latest case has heightened fears about safety in the market.

Rivers State has experienced tensions in markets before, sometimes escalating to violence. Traders from other states, including Benue, Delta, and Enugu, often sell in Port Harcourt markets, creating a mix of diverse communities in busy market areas. Disputes over space, prices, and goods occasionally lead to conflicts.

Residents of Rumuokwurusi expressed shock at the killing, with some calling for peace and calm. “This incident is very sad. Traders must learn to resolve issues without resorting to violence,” said one market elder.

The Rivers State Police Command has assured the public that the suspect will be thoroughly investigated. CSP Iringe-Koko stated that officers are working to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the attack.

The suspect, Zakara Afaaruwu, is currently detained at the local police station while authorities conduct further inquiries. Police sources say that evidence, including witness statements and CCTV footage, will be used to clarify the events that led to Wenem’s death.

The command has urged residents and traders in Port Harcourt markets to remain calm and allow law enforcement to handle the case professionally. Authorities also reminded traders and service providers to resolve disputes peacefully and seek police assistance when conflicts arise.

Market violence, though relatively rare, poses a significant threat to commerce and public safety. Experts suggest that local governments should implement measures such as market marshals, regulated spaces for wheelbarrow pushers, and emergency response plans to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Benue State traders in Port Harcourt have expressed concern over their safety following the killing. Many called for heightened security in markets to ensure that all traders, irrespective of their state of origin, can operate without fear of attacks.

As investigations continue, the Rivers State Police Command is expected to provide updates on the progress of the case and any further arrests related to the incident.
