The Oyo State Fire Service has recovered the body of a 27-year-old man from a well in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, in what officials described as a tragic accident caused by inhalation of toxic gas.

The agency made the disclosure in a statement released by its Chairman, Hon. Maroof Akinwande. According to him, the incident occurred on Thursday evening at 5, Binukonu Olota, in the Laogun area of Ibadan.

The deceased reportedly attempted to clean debris inside an abandoned well when he was overcome by ammonia gas, which led to his death. Ammonia is a toxic chemical that can cause respiratory distress or suffocation if inhaled in confined spaces.

“Upon arrival, the officers quickly swung into action with necessary rescue equipment, recovered the body, and handed it over to a team of policemen from Gbagi Police Divisional Headquarters, Ibadan,” Akinwande said.

The Oyo State Fire Service explained that the well was abandoned and poorly ventilated, making it particularly dangerous. They warned that wells left uncovered or unattended pose serious risks to the public.
