The tragic incident happened on Monday in Gboko, the headquarters of Gboko Local Government Area.

After carrying out the attack, the suspects fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of money believed to have been taken from the POS business.

The killing has left many residents of the area in grief, as people described the victim as a hardworking young man who was trying to earn a living through his small business.

An eyewitness who spoke on condition of anonymity said the incident happened very quickly and left people in the area terrified.

“It happened so fast. We never imagined such violence here,” the witness said.

According to residents, the sound of the gunshot caused panic in the neighbourhood, with traders and customers running for safety.

Some people nearby reportedly rushed to the scene after the attackers fled, but the victim had already sustained serious injuries.

Efforts to save him were unsuccessful, leaving residents and customers who knew him in deep sorrow.

Community members said the young man had been operating the POS business for some time and was known in the area for his calm and respectful behaviour.

Many residents said the incident has increased fear among small business owners who operate POS stands and other roadside businesses.

POS businesses have become very common across Nigeria in recent years.

They provide financial services such as cash withdrawals, transfers and bill payments, especially in areas where bank branches or automated teller machines are limited.

In many towns and rural communities, POS operators serve as a major link between banks and residents who need access to cash.

However, the growth of POS businesses has also exposed operators to security risks.

Because they often handle cash and operate in open public spaces, they sometimes become targets for thieves and armed robbers.

Security experts say many POS operators work long hours and sometimes keep large amounts of money at their stands, which can attract criminals.

In some parts of the country, there have been reports of attacks on POS operators, with criminals stealing money or equipment.

Residents in Gboko said the latest killing has raised serious concerns about the safety of people running small businesses in the town.

Some traders and business owners are calling for increased security patrols, especially in busy commercial areas.

They also urged security agencies to take stronger action to prevent similar incidents in the future.

A trader who works near the scene of the attack said many people now feel unsafe.

“People are afraid because this kind of thing does not usually happen here. We hope the authorities will do something quickly,” the trader said.

As of the time this report was filed, the spokesperson of the Benue State Police Command, Udeme Edet, could not be reached to confirm the incident.

Residents said they expect the police to launch an investigation into the killing and track down those responsible.

Community leaders have also appealed to security agencies to improve surveillance and patrols across Gboko and nearby communities.

They believe stronger security presence will help discourage criminals and protect residents.

The incident has once again highlighted the risks faced by young Nigerians who operate small businesses in order to survive in a difficult economic environment.

For many youths, POS services have become one of the few available ways to earn income and support their families.
