The African Democratic Congress has dismissed reports claiming that the Senator representing the Federal Capital Territory, Ireti Kingibe, has been suspended from the party.
The party described the reports as false and misleading, stating that it has not taken any disciplinary action against the lawmaker.
The denial was issued on Thursday by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi.
In a brief statement, Abdullahi said the party was not aware of any decision to suspend the senator.
“The African Democratic Congress is unaware of any suspension of Senator Ireti Kingibe, the distinguished Senator representing the Federal Capital Territory,” he said.
He added that the reports circulating about the alleged suspension should be regarded as fake news.
The clarification followed reports and online discussions suggesting that the senator had been suspended from the party.
Some social media posts had claimed that disciplinary action had been taken against her by party officials.
However, the ADC spokesman said the party had not announced any such decision and urged the public to disregard the reports.
Senator Ireti Kingibe currently represents the Federal Capital Territory in the Senate of Nigeria.
She was elected in the 2023 general elections, becoming one of the few female senators in the National Assembly.
The National Assembly is Nigeria’s federal legislature and consists of two chambers: the Senate and the House of Representatives.
Kingibe’s victory in the FCT senatorial race drew attention because it marked a major political shift in Abuja.
The Federal Capital Territory is the seat of Nigeria’s government and has traditionally been dominated by major political parties.
Her election under the ADC platform helped increase the party’s visibility at the national level.
The African Democratic Congress is one of Nigeria’s registered political parties and has participated in several national and state elections.
Although it is smaller than some of the country’s major parties, the ADC has continued to build its presence in Nigerian politics.
Party officials said maintaining unity and stability within the party remains a priority.
The spokesman stressed that any official disciplinary action against a party member would be communicated through proper channels.
He therefore urged members of the public and the media to rely only on official statements from the party.
In recent years, Nigerian political parties have had to address misinformation spread through social media and unofficial sources.
Such reports can sometimes cause tension within parties or mislead the public about political developments.
By issuing the clarification, the ADC said it hopes to set the record straight and reassure supporters that Senator Kingibe remains a member of the party.
