The Ogun State Police Command has begun an investigation following viral reports that popular Nigerian skit maker Samuel Perry, widely known as Broda Shaggi, was allegedly shot in the Sango-Ota area of the state.
The police clarified on Thursday that preliminary checks show no evidence that such an incident occurred anywhere within the state. Authorities also stated that no official report of a shooting involving the entertainer has been received at any police station across Ogun.
The rumour, which spread quickly on social media, claimed that the comedian had been shot by unknown persons in Sango-Ota. The claim triggered widespread concern among fans and followers of the comedian, who is one of Nigeria’s most recognisable online entertainers.
However, the police have urged the public to remain calm while an investigation is ongoing to determine the true situation.
In a statement issued by the command’s spokesperson, Oluseyi Babaseyi, the police said there was no confirmation that any shooting involving the comedian took place within their jurisdiction.
“For clarity, the command cannot confirm that such an incident occurred anywhere within its jurisdiction,” the statement said.
The police spokesperson added that no police formation in the state had recorded a complaint or report related to the alleged shooting.
“Additionally, no such incident has been reported at any police formation across the state,” the statement added.
Despite the lack of official confirmation, the police said they had started an investigation as part of their duty to verify claims that could cause public concern.
According to the police, the investigation is meant to establish the facts surrounding the report and determine whether there is any truth to the claim.
“In line with the Command’s commitment to professionalism and transparency, investigations have been initiated to ascertain the facts and verify the claim,” the statement said.
The command explained that officers are reviewing available information and carrying out checks to understand how the rumour started and whether any security incident actually occurred.
Authorities also urged residents and social media users to rely only on official communication from law enforcement agencies instead of spreading unverified information online.
“The command is actively carrying out necessary investigations to determine the true circumstances of the report,” the police said.
The incident highlights how quickly rumours can spread on social media, especially when they involve well-known public figures.
In recent years, several false reports about celebrities and public personalities have circulated widely online in Nigeria before being corrected by authorities or the individuals involved.
The police in Ogun State said they remain committed to maintaining security across the state and urged the public to cooperate with authorities by sharing credible information when necessary.
Broda Shaggi is one of Nigeria’s most popular online comedians. Known for his energetic acting style and humorous portrayal of a street-smart character wearing a red cap, he has built a large fan base across social media platforms.
His real name is Samuel Perry, and he gained national recognition through short comedy skits posted online. Over the years, he has expanded his career into acting, music, and brand partnerships.
The comedian has also appeared in several Nigerian films and television productions, further strengthening his presence in the entertainment industry.
His content often reflects everyday Nigerian experiences, which has helped him connect with millions of viewers both in Nigeria and among the diaspora.
Because of his popularity, any news involving him tends to attract strong attention online, which partly explains why the rumoured shooting spread quickly.
Security authorities say the ongoing investigation will determine whether the claim has any factual basis or if it is simply another case of online misinformation.
The police stressed that citizens should avoid spreading unconfirmed reports, especially when they involve public safety or well-known personalities.
“Citizens are advised to rely solely on official police communication while the investigation runs its course,” the statement said.
The command also reassured residents that it remains focused on protecting lives and property throughout the state.
“The Command remains committed to the safety of all residents and the maintenance of law and order across Ogun State,” the statement added.
