At least eight people have been killed in a fresh attack by suspected bandits in Mbwelle village, Kwatas District of Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State, deepening fears over renewed violence in the region.

The нападение, which occurred late on April 9 at about 10:30 p.m., has been described by security sources as part of a growing pattern of reprisal attacks in parts of the state.

Residents said the attackers stormed the quiet farming community under the cover of darkness, catching many villagers unprepared. Gunshots were reportedly heard across the area as people ran for safety.

By the time the нападение ended, eight people had lost their lives. The victims have been identified as Habila Istifanus, 38; Hassan Istifanus, 31; Iliya Mangut, 70; Sunday Gideon, 31; Innocent Banabas, 20; Lucky Titus, 38; Wisdom Lucky, 15; and Bwehsun Hassan, 25.

Security agencies said they received a distress call from the community and immediately mobilised to respond. However, by the time joint security forces arrived, the attackers had already fled.

A security source explained that the delay was due to the distance between the troops’ base and Mbwelle village, which is about 15 kilometres away. The difficult terrain in the area also slowed down the response.

“The troops moved as quickly as possible, but the attackers escaped before they got there,” the source said.

All the victims, including those who sustained injuries, were taken to Bokkos Cottage Hospital for treatment. While some of the injured are said to be responding to care, families of the deceased have been left in mourning.

Following the incident, troops have launched operations to track down the perpetrators. Security agencies say efforts are ongoing to locate the attackers and prevent further violence.

The latest killings have raised concerns about a possible return to widespread violence in Plateau State, which has experienced cycles of conflict over the years.

Plateau, located in Nigeria’s North-Central region, has long faced tensions linked to land disputes, ethnic differences and farmer-herder clashes. Communities in Bokkos, Barkin Ladi, Riyom and other local government areas have been particularly affected.

In recent years, attacks in rural communities have often been described as reprisals, where one incident leads to another in a cycle of violence.

Local residents say such attacks are becoming more frequent and unpredictable, leaving many communities living in fear.

“This kind of thing keeps happening,” a resident of the area said. “People go to bed not knowing if they will wake up to an attack.”

Community leaders have repeatedly called for stronger security presence in vulnerable areas, especially rural villages that are far from military bases.

They argue that the long distance between security posts and communities often gives attackers enough time to strike and escape.

Despite these challenges, authorities have assured residents that efforts are being made to improve response times and strengthen security operations.

The latest attack has once again drawn attention to the broader security challenges facing Nigeria, particularly in rural areas where armed groups continue to operate.

Across different parts of the country, including the North-West and North-Central regions, communities have faced attacks by bandits and other armed groups.

These incidents have led to loss of lives, displacement of residents and destruction of property, affecting livelihoods and increasing humanitarian concerns.

In Plateau State, efforts have been made in the past to promote peace and dialogue among communities. However, sporadic outbreaks of violence continue to undermine these efforts.

For now, residents of Mbwelle village are struggling to come to terms with the latest tragedy.

Families have begun mourning their loved ones, while others remain on edge, worried about the possibility of further attacks.

As security forces continue their search for the attackers, many are hoping that those responsible will be brought to justice.

The government has also been urged to take stronger steps to protect lives and property, especially in rural communities that are often the hardest hit.

For the people of Bokkos and surrounding areas, the hope is that peace will return and that such attacks will come to an end.

But until then, fear and uncertainty remain part of daily life for many residents in Plateau State.
