Former Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose has alleged that Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde is plotting to remove the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rahidi Adewolu Ladoja, from his position.

Fayose made the claim in a post shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Sunday, stirring fresh political tension in Oyo State and raising concerns among traditional and political stakeholders in the South-West.

According to Fayose, the alleged plan to remove the monarch is expected to begin this week. He claimed that the Oyo State Government may issue an official query to the Olubadan, citing several allegations against him.

“I heard reliably that Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State is plotting the removal of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rahidi Adewolu Ladoja,” Fayose wrote.

He further alleged that one of the reasons for the planned action is the monarch’s absence at a recent coronation ceremony involving some high chiefs in Ibadanland. The event, which reportedly did not go as planned, has already generated debate within the traditional system in the state.

“The plot is to commence this week, with a government query to be issued against the Olubadan, citing his absence at the failed coronation of High Chiefs in Ibadanland two weeks ago, and other allegations,” Fayose added.

The former governor, known for his outspoken nature, ended his message with a warning tone, suggesting that people would be watching how events unfold.

“As for us, we will be watching the moves of Seyi Makinde,” he said.

As of the time of filing this report, the Oyo State Government has not issued any official response to the allegations. There has also been no public statement from the palace of the Olubadan addressing the claims.

The development has, however, sparked discussions among residents of Ibadan and political observers, many of whom see the allegation as a serious issue that could affect the traditional institution in the state.

The Olubadan of Ibadanland is one of the most respected traditional rulers in Yorubaland. The position is unique because of its well-structured succession system, which is often described as one of the most organised traditional leadership arrangements in Nigeria.

Under this system, high chiefs move up through a recognised line until they eventually become the Olubadan. This process has helped to reduce disputes over succession, which are common in some other traditional settings.

Oba Rahidi Adewolu Ladoja, who is the current Olubadan, is himself a former governor of Oyo State. His emergence as monarch followed the traditional succession line, and his position carries significant influence both culturally and politically.

In recent years, there have been occasional disagreements between state governments and traditional institutions in different parts of Nigeria, often linked to issues of authority, protocol and recognition.

In Oyo State, matters relating to the traditional council and chieftaincy titles have sometimes led to tensions, especially when government policies or actions are seen as interfering with established customs.

The reported “failed coronation” mentioned by Fayose is believed to be part of ongoing disputes within the Ibadan traditional system. While details remain unclear, such events often involve disagreements over procedures, recognition of chiefs, or interpretations of tradition.

They also note that removing a traditional ruler is not a simple process. It usually involves legal procedures, investigations and consultations with traditional councils and other stakeholders.

For many residents, the situation calls for caution and transparency. Some have urged the state government to clarify its position to avoid rumours and misinformation.

Others have called on political leaders to respect traditional institutions and avoid actions that could destabilise the system.

“This is a sensitive matter. The government should come out clearly and explain what is happening,” a resident of Ibadan said.

There are also concerns about the impact such developments could have on peace and unity in the state. Traditional rulers often play important roles in conflict resolution and community leadership, especially at the grassroots level.

As the situation develops, attention will be on the Oyo State Government and the Olubadan’s palace for any official statements that could confirm or deny the allegations.

For now, Fayose’s claim has added a new dimension to the political landscape in Oyo State, with many waiting to see whether the alleged plot will materialise or fade as speculation.

The coming days are likely to be crucial in determining the direction of events, as stakeholders watch closely and call for calm.
