Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has publicly declared Senator Solomon Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, as the consensus candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the 2027 governorship election in the state.
The announcement was made on Monday during a high-level caucus meeting of APC leaders and stakeholders in Ogun State. The meeting, which brought together key figures within the party, focused on succession planning and early preparations for the next election cycle.
In a video clip that has since circulated widely, Governor Abiodun addressed party members while dressed in a light blue agbada and a black cap. Speaking confidently, he told the gathering that the party had already made up its mind on who should carry its flag in the next governorship election.
“But first, we’ve decided who is deserving as the next flag bearer of our dear state,” the governor said.
Immediately after the statement, Senator Adeola stood up from his seat, prompting loud cheers from supporters present at the meeting. The atmosphere quickly turned celebratory, with chants, applause, and the sound of trumpets filling the hall as party members showed their approval of the decision.
The moment marked a significant step in Ogun State politics, as it signals an early endorsement of a successor nearly two years before the 2027 general elections. Such early declarations are not uncommon in Nigerian politics, where parties often begin internal arrangements well ahead of official campaign periods.
Governor Abiodun also used the opportunity to stress the importance of unity within the APC. He reminded party members of past transitions in leadership and how cooperation had helped the party maintain control of the state.
According to him, the choice of a consensus candidate is aimed at avoiding internal conflicts and ensuring that the party remains strong and united going into the next election.
Senator Adeola, who represents Ogun West in the National Assembly, is a well-known figure in both state and national politics. Before moving to Ogun State politics, he served as a lawmaker representing Lagos West, building a reputation as an experienced legislator.
His political journey and visibility within the APC are believed to have contributed to his emergence as the party’s preferred candidate. Supporters describe him as someone with the experience and network needed to continue the policies of the current administration.
Although Adeola has not made a formal declaration of his governorship ambition, Monday’s endorsement places him in a strong position ahead of other potential aspirants within the party.
The APC has been the dominant political force in Ogun State since 2011, when it took over power from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Since then, the party has maintained its hold on the state through successive administrations.
Governor Abiodun, who is currently serving his second term, will complete his tenure in 2027 and is constitutionally barred from seeking re-election. This makes the question of succession a key issue within the party.
In recent months, there have been speculations about who would succeed him, with several names mentioned in political circles. However, Monday’s development appears to have narrowed the field significantly.
Reactions to the announcement have been mixed. While many party members at the meeting openly supported the decision, some political analysts have warned that early endorsements could discourage healthy competition within the party.
They argue that allowing multiple aspirants to contest can strengthen democracy and give voters more options. However, others believe that consensus arrangements help reduce tension and prevent costly internal battles.
For the opposition parties in Ogun State, the APC’s early move may serve as a signal to begin their own preparations. The 2027 election is still some time away, but political activities are already taking shape.
As the political landscape continues to evolve, all eyes will be on how other stakeholders within the APC respond to the endorsement and whether it will hold as the election approaches.
For now, Senator Adeola’s emergence as the consensus candidate marks a major development in Ogun State politics and sets the stage for what could be a closely watched governorship race in the coming years.
