Tragedy struck Kwallak community in Langtang North Local Government Area of Plateau State, as three persons suspected of killing a traditional ruler were burnt alive by an angry mob on Friday night.

The suspects were accused of being involved in the murder of the traditional ruler of Kwallak community, known as the Ponzhi Kwallak, whose death had already thrown the area into mourning and tension.

According to residents, the monarch was attacked on Thursday night at his residence by unknown assailants. The attackers reportedly killed him and stole his motorcycle, mobile phone, and other personal belongings before fleeing the scene.

The killing of the traditional ruler shocked the community, leading to a swift search for those responsible. Local youths and security volunteers reportedly began tracking suspects believed to be connected to the crime.

However, the situation took a violent turn when some angry youths decided to take the law into their own hands. Despite initial attempts by other residents to hand the suspects over to security operatives, the mob eventually overpowered them.

The suspects were then set on fire near the Council Secretariat in the area, according to multiple eyewitness accounts.

A resident who spoke on condition of anonymity described the incident as chaotic and disturbing. He said there were efforts by some community members to stop the mob action, but they were overwhelmed by a larger group of angry youths.

“Members of the community caught the suspects where they wanted to sell the motorcycle and they confessed to the crime,” the resident said. “Before the angry mob descended on them and burnt them.”

The incident has raised fresh concerns about the rising cases of jungle justice in parts of Nigeria, where suspects are punished by mobs without trial or legal process.

Jungle justice, also known as mob justice, is the act of taking the law into one’s hands instead of allowing security agencies and courts to handle criminal cases. It often leads to the brutal killing of suspects, regardless of whether they are guilty or not.

Nigeria’s laws clearly state that every suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Security agencies are responsible for investigating crimes and ensuring that suspects face proper legal procedures.

However, in many communities, delays in justice delivery, lack of trust in the system, and anger over violent crimes often lead residents to take matters into their own hands.

The killing of the traditional ruler had already heightened emotions in Kwallak community, as residents struggled to come to terms with the loss of their leader. The monarch was said to be well respected and played an important role in maintaining peace in the area.

His death has also raised concerns about insecurity in rural parts of Plateau State, where cases of robbery, kidnapping, and communal violence have been reported in recent years.

Human rights advocates are expected to condemn the incident, calling for restraint and respect for the rule of law.

Plateau State has experienced several security challenges over the years, including clashes between farmers and herders, bandit attacks, and isolated cases of violent crime. These incidents have often led to tensions between communities and increased fear among residents.

While community members often feel compelled to react quickly to crimes, experts say such reactions can worsen the situation and lead to more violence.

They advise that suspects should always be handed over to the police or other security agencies for proper investigation and prosecution.

The latest incident adds to a growing list of mob justice cases reported across Nigeria, despite repeated warnings from authorities.

For now, the community of Kwallak remains in shock over both the killing of their traditional ruler and the brutal deaths of the three suspects.

As investigations continue, residents are calling for calm and urging security agencies to improve their response to crime in the area.
