Nana Otedola, mother of popular Nigerian singer DJ Cuppy, has publicly clarified her identity following ongoing assumptions about her nationality, stating clearly that she is Nigerian and proudly from the Egba ethnic group in Ogun State.
In a video currently trending on social media, Nana Otedola addressed the issue while speaking with her daughter, Temi, in a light but direct conversation that has since attracted wide attention online.
She explained that although she has often been mistaken for a Ghanaian, her true roots are in Abeokuta, Ogun State, in the South-West region of Nigeria.
“To clear the room for everybody, I’m an Egba woman and that’s the part I’ll gladly claim as a Nigerian. I am not a Ghanaian, my root is Abeokuta,” she said.
Nana Otedola added that while she was born in Kaduna State in northern Nigeria and spent nearly 20 years living there, her ethnic identity remains firmly Egba.
She noted that her long stay in different parts of the country may have contributed to the confusion about her background.
“I was born in Kaduna and lived there for almost two decades,” she said, explaining that her upbringing exposed her to different cultures within Nigeria.
In the same video, she also shared details about her name, stating that she is known as Nana Fatima, a name given to her during a naming ceremony by her grandfather.
“I go by the name Nana Fatima, given to me on my sunnah by my grandfather,” she added.
The clarification comes amid growing public interest in the families of Nigerian celebrities, especially as social media continues to highlight personal stories and backgrounds of public figures.
The Otedola family is also well known in Nigeria’s public space, with businessman Femi Otedola being one of the country’s prominent figures in the oil and energy sector. The family name has frequently appeared in media discussions due to their influence in business and entertainment.
Over the years, there have been occasional public misconceptions about Nana Otedola’s nationality, with some social media users wrongly assuming she has Ghanaian roots.
Her latest statement appears aimed at correcting those assumptions and affirming her Nigerian identity.
Ethnic identity remains a sensitive and important subject in Nigeria, a country made up of more than 250 ethnic groups. Many Nigerians often identify strongly with both their ethnic roots and the different regions where they were born or raised.
Nana Otedola’s explanation reflects this reality, as she highlighted both her birthplace in Kaduna and her ancestral ties to Abeokuta.
Social media users have reacted differently to the video, with many praising her for setting the record straight, while others focused on the broader conversation about identity and cultural belonging in Nigeria.
Some users described her statement as a reminder of Nigeria’s diversity and the importance of understanding personal heritage beyond assumptions made online.
In recent years, viral social media clips involving celebrities and their families have often sparked conversations about identity, culture and personal history. These discussions frequently gain traction due to the large followings of the individuals involved.
For Nana Otedola, the video has now placed her in the spotlight, not for controversy, but for a simple clarification about who she is and where she comes from.
By affirming her Egba heritage, she has added her voice to ongoing conversations about identity in Nigeria, a country where cultural pride remains strong and deeply rooted.
Her message, delivered in a calm and personal tone, underscores the importance of self-definition in an age where misinformation and assumptions can easily spread online.
As the video continues to circulate, many viewers say it offers a clearer understanding of her background and puts to rest long-standing confusion about her nationality.
