The National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved six new undergraduate programmes for the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), a move expected to expand the institution’s academic offerings and provide more opportunities for students seeking admission into Nigerian universities.
The approval will take effect from the 2026/2027 academic session and follows a successful resource assessment exercise conducted by the commission to determine the university’s readiness to run the new programmes.
The development was announced in a statement issued on Wednesday by the Acting Head of the Directorate of Public Relations of the university, Mr. Olasunkanmi Olajide.
According to the statement, the newly approved full-time undergraduate programmes are Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Geophysics, Public Health, Biotechnology, Science Laboratory Technology, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, and Clothing and Textile.
The university said the approval came after the NUC carried out a detailed assessment of the institution’s facilities, manpower and other resources required to run the proposed programmes.
The statement explained that the commission evaluated the availability of qualified academic staff, classrooms, laboratories, equipment and other facilities before granting approval.
It added that the decision reflects the NUC’s confidence in the university’s ability to successfully deliver the new courses in line with national academic standards.
“In a letter addressed to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Babatunde Kehinde, the Executive Secretary of the NUC conveyed the Commission’s approval for the establishment of the programmes after a thorough consideration of the outcome of the resource assessment exercise,” the statement said.
University officials described the approval as another important step in FUNAAB’s efforts to broaden its academic scope and respond to changing national and global demands.
The institution noted that the new programmes are designed to address growing needs in critical sectors such as science, health, technology, environmental management and sustainable development.
Similarly, Biotechnology and Science Laboratory Technology are expected to support advances in scientific research, agriculture, healthcare and industrial development.
Geophysics, another newly approved programme, is regarded as a key field in natural resource exploration, environmental studies and disaster management. Experts believe graduates in the discipline can contribute to sectors such as mining, oil and gas, environmental protection and infrastructure development.
The Clothing and Textile program is also expected to create opportunities in Nigeria’s growing fashion and textile industry, which continues to provide employment and entrepreneurial opportunities for thousands of young people across the country.
The university said the addition of the six programmes demonstrates its commitment to producing graduates equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to contribute to national growth and development.
According to the statement, the approval marks another milestone in FUNAAB’s drive to enhance manpower development and provide solutions to emerging challenges through education, research and innovation.

Founded in 1988, FUNAAB is one of Nigeria’s specialised federal universities and has built a strong reputation in agriculture, science, engineering and related fields. Like other universities in Nigeria, FUNAAB must obtain approval from the NUC before introducing new academic programmes.
