The Katsina State Police Command has arrested a man, Kabir Sani, following the death of his teenage daughter, Ummul Khair, in an incident that has shocked residents of the Shagari Low-Cost area of Katsina metropolis.
The police said the father is currently in custody while detectives investigate allegations that he physically assaulted the girl before she died.
The tragic incident has sparked concern among residents, who claimed the teenager had been involved in a long-running disagreement with her father over an alleged marriage arrangement she did not support.
According to residents of the community, tensions had existed between the father and daughter for some time because of plans to marry her to a suitor she reportedly rejected.
Neighbours said the disagreements had become frequent in recent weeks, although the exact circumstances surrounding the family dispute are now part of the police investigation.
Residents alleged that the situation turned tragic on Wednesday when the teenager was reportedly beaten inside the family home.
Several neighbours said they heard cries for help coming from the house and became worried as the incident continued.
One resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said people in the neighbourhood tried to find out what was happening after hearing the girl’s distress calls.
According to the resident, those who attempted to intervene were unable to gain access to the house.
“We heard her voice and tried to find out what was happening, but no one was allowed into the house. The next thing we heard was that she had passed away,” the resident said.
Community members said the news of the teenager’s death spread quickly on Thursday morning after some of her schoolmates arrived at the house to accompany her to school.
Instead of meeting their classmate, they reportedly learned that she had died during the night.
The incident left many residents in shock, with neighbours expressing sadness over the loss of the young girl and calling for a thorough investigation to determine exactly what happened.
The Katsina State Police Command has since confirmed the arrest of the girl’s father.
The command’s spokesperson, DSP Sadik Aliyu, said the suspect was taken into custody shortly after the incident was reported.
He confirmed that detectives had opened a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the girl’s death.
According to the police, the father will remain in custody while investigators gather evidence, interview witnesses and determine whether criminal charges will be filed.
The police did not disclose further details about the investigation, saying inquiries are still ongoing.
Authorities are also expected to carry out medical and forensic procedures, including an autopsy if necessary, to establish the exact cause of death.
Police urged members of the public to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information while the investigation continues.
