*Lagos, Nigeria* – The mysterious death of Nigerian medical doctor, Dr. Emeka Agbo, in Amman, Jordan, has sparked widespread outrage, with family, friends, and concerned citizens calling for a thorough investigation.
Dr. Agbo, a 45-year-old Polio Technical Officer working with the World Health Organization (WHO) in Jordan, was reportedly found dead under unclear circumstances, leading to an outpouring of grief and demands for justice across social media.
The news of Dr. Agbo’s death broke when a user with the handle @RealOlaudah posted on X (formerly known as Twitter), revealing that Dr. Agbo had allegedly been murdered in Amman.
The post read, “A young brilliant Nigerian medical doctor and Polio Technical Officer working with @WHOJordan Dr. Emeka Agbo was recently murdered in Amman, Jordan.
“He was aged 45 years. Emeka had complained to his wife of threats he was receiving from two of the expatriate doctor colleagues he was working with. I hope @WHO and the Jordanian police bring closure to his young family.”
This revelation has fueled public concern, with many Nigerians, including prominent figures, urging the WHO and Jordanian authorities to conduct a transparent investigation.
Engr. Lucky, a user on X, expressed the collective frustration, stating, “The @WHOJordan must do everything humanly possible to get justice for the family. May God intervene on their behalf and get justice.”
Similarly, another user, KeneMystic, called for caution in the dissemination of information, emphasizing the need for verified facts.
“This is not the story the family has out there. It’s important to respect or at least have evidence before pushing any narrative to the public. May his soul find rest in the bosom of his maker.”
In response to the growing outcry, the Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, assured the public that the matter is being taken seriously. Commenting on the incident, she stated, “This is indeed a very sad incident. @nidcom_gov has been in touch with the family. The attention of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been brought to the matter. And it will be thoroughly looked into.”
Dr. Agbo was a respected figure within the WHO, known for his dedication to public health and disease eradication. He had recently joined the Polio Eradication team in Amman, where he played a key role as the Regional Incident Support Manager for polio outbreaks in Sudan and Djibouti. Before his assignment in Jordan, Dr. Agbo had a distinguished career, leading response efforts to cholera and polio outbreaks in Kenya, Malawi, and other regions, working tirelessly to protect vulnerable populations from disease.
The WHO, in a statement, expressed deep sadness over Dr. Agbo’s sudden passing, describing him as a “humble, energetic, considerate, kind, and passionate” individual who was deeply committed to his work. The organization extended its condolences to Dr. Agbo’s family, including his wife and three children.
