    Share

Senator Muhammad Bima has expressed strong belief in the potential of the shea butter sector to rival Nigeria’s oil industry.

He emphasizes that, with proper attention and support from the Federal Government, this sector can significantly contribute to the country’s economic growth.

Senator Bima represents Niger South and made these remarks during a recent chat with journalists in Minna.

He highlighted Nigeria’s impressive position as a leading global player in the shea butter industry, accounting for 53 percent of the world’s output of this valuable commodity.

Senator Bima referred to the shea butter sector as a “goldmine” that is waiting to be fully explored.

He pointed out that Nigeria is the world’s largest producer of shea nuts, which are the raw material for producing shea butter.

Unlocking the full potential of this sector, he believes, could help diversify the Nigerian economy and generate wealth for many citizens.

“The shea butter sector has the potential to generate wealth and employment opportunities for large numbers of people,” Bima said.

He added that this sector was largely neglected until he began advocating for it during the 9th Assembly.

The global market for shea butter is currently valued at approximately $2.17 billion as of 2022.

Experts predict that it will grow at an impressive rate of 7.1 percent annually from 2023 to 2030.

This growth presents a unique opportunity for Nigeria to tap into a lucrative market.

Senator Bima emphasized that the benefits of developing the shea butter sector extend beyond financial gains.

“By investing in this sector, we can provide jobs for our youth and improve the livelihoods of farmers,” he said.

Through his advocacy, Bima has seen positive changes on the ground.

Senator Bima also commended President Bola Tinubu for supporting agricultural development efforts in Niger State.

He highlighted that Governor Mohammed Umar Bago’s initiatives aim to boost food production and enhance the overall agricultural sector.

Such support is crucial in harnessing the potential of the shea butter industry.

“We need to create policies that encourage farmers to invest in shea butter production,” Bima stressed.

He believes that government support can help farmers access resources and markets more effectively.
