A late-night altercation at a popular Lagos nightclub took a tragic turn when a bouncer allegedly stabbed a patron to death during a confrontation in the club’s parking lot. The incident occurred in the early hours of Monday, October 9, 2024, at a club and lounge located on Ago Palace Way, Ago-Okota.

According to a statement released by the Lagos State Police Command, the incident was reported to the Ago-Okota Police Division by the club’s manager at approximately 11:30 am that same day. The club manager told the police that the altercation between the bouncer, identified as Kingsley Oti, and the yet-to-be-identified victim took place at around 3:30 am, leading to the tragic death of the man.

The confrontation reportedly started in the parking lot of the club and lounge. According to initial reports, the victim, believed to be a suspected hoodlum, got into a heated argument with the club’s bouncer, Kingsley Oti. The argument quickly escalated into violence, with Oti allegedly stabbing the man during the altercation.

Following the stabbing, the victim collapsed and became unconscious. Witnesses and staff at the club immediately rushed him to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) in Idi-Araba, Mushin, hoping to save his life. Unfortunately, upon arrival at the hospital, doctors confirmed that the man had died from his injuries.

Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, provided further details of the police response to the incident. He confirmed that detectives from the Ago-Okota Division visited the scene of the crime shortly after receiving the report. The police team also visited Lagos University Teaching Hospital, where the victim’s body was inspected, and photographs were taken as part of the ongoing investigation.

“The scene was visited by a team of detectives from the division, who also visited the hospital where the corpse was inspected and photographs were taken,” Hundeyin said in a statement.

The victim’s body has since been moved to the Mainland General Hospital Morgue in Yaba, where an autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death. The police spokesperson added that the investigation into the incident is ongoing, and detectives are working to gather more information on what led to the fatal altercation.

As the investigation unfolds, questions are being raised about the legal consequences the bouncer, Kingsley Oti, could face if found guilty of the alleged stabbing. Nigerian law clearly stipulates severe penalties for violent crimes, especially those resulting in death.

If Oti is charged with murder or manslaughter, he could face life imprisonment or even the death penalty under Nigerian law. The Lagos State Criminal Code considers homicide a capital offense, and given the circumstances of the incident, Oti may be facing a lengthy legal battle.
