A group of sports journalists has been kidnapped in Anambra State while traveling to cover an important football match.

The journalists were on their way to Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, to report on the upcoming African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying match between Nigeria and Libya. The match is scheduled for Friday at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium.

The abduction occurred in the Isseke community of Ihiala Local Government Area. Reports indicate that the journalists, numbering around 11, were traveling in a bus when they were attacked. Eyewitnesses say the incident took place on Wednesday afternoon.

One source familiar with the situation noted, “They were just going about their work, heading to cover a significant event for Nigeria. It is tragic that they fell into the hands of criminals.”

Following the kidnapping, security forces quickly sprang into action. By Thursday morning, reports emerged that nine of the journalists had been rescued. Unfortunately, one of the victims, identified as Kola, was found dead. Four other journalists are still unaccounted for and remain in captivity.

Police authorities in Anambra confirmed the incident and reported on the ongoing rescue efforts. SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, provided updates on the situation.

“Joint security forces have successfully rescued six members of the media crew who were abducted while traveling from Lagos to Uyo along the Isseke-Orlu Road in Ihiala,” Ikenga stated.

He added, “Operations are still ongoing for the possible rescue of the seventh crew member. Further developments shall be communicated.”

Kidnapping for ransom has become a serious issue in Nigeria, affecting people from all walks of life. Criminal gangs often target travelers on highways, making road travel risky. Anambra State, in particular, has seen a rise in these incidents.

According to a report by the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime, kidnappings in Nigeria have surged in recent years, with thousands of individuals abducted each year. The situation is alarming and has raised concerns about safety and security in the country.

This abduction highlights the dangers faced by journalists in Nigeria, especially those covering sports and other events. Journalists play a crucial role in informing the public, and such incidents can deter them from doing their jobs effectively.

A colleague of the abducted journalists expressed concern over their safety. “This is a wake-up call for all of us in the media. We need to prioritize our safety while performing our duties,” they said.

The abduction has sparked outrage and concern within the community and beyond. Many have taken to social media to express their fears and call for more security measures to protect journalists and travelers.

One social media user wrote, “This is unacceptable! Journalists should not be targeted for doing their jobs. We need better security for everyone on our roads.”

In response to the rising incidents of kidnapping, local leaders and community members are demanding that the government take immediate action to ensure the safety of its citizens. They are urging for increased police presence and better surveillance along major roads, especially in areas known for high kidnapping rates.
