The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the date for the next Anambra governorship election.
The election will be held on Saturday, November 8, 2025.
This was announced by the INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, during a meeting with representatives of political parties in Abuja.
Yakubu stated that the election was due because the last one took place in November 2021.
“As you are aware, the last governorship election in Anambra State was held on 6th November 2021. By the effluxion of time, the governorship election is due next year,” he said.
The INEC Chairman explained that the Commission has already approved the date for the election.
“Consequently, the Commission has approved that the 2025 Anambra State Governorship election will hold on Saturday, 8th November 2025,” he announced.
Yakubu also gave a breakdown of the key activities that will take place before the election.
He said the formal notice for the election will be published on November 13, 2024.
This notice will signal the official start of the election process.
Yakubu said that political parties must hold their primaries between March 20, 2025, and April 10, 2025.
This is the period when political parties will choose the candidates who will run for the governorship election.
The INEC Chairman also shared the schedule for the nomination of candidates.
He said the portal for submitting candidate nominations will open on April 18, 2025, at 9:00 AM and close on May 12, 2025, at 6:00 PM.
This means political parties will have about a month to submit their chosen candidates to INEC.
Yakubu further explained that the final list of candidates will be published on June 9, 2025.
After that, political parties can start campaigning for the election.
Campaigns will officially begin on June 11, 2025, and must end by midnight on Thursday, November 6, 2025, which is two days before the election.
Yakubu also provided details on where voting will take place.
He said that there are 5,720 polling units across Anambra State where people will vote on Election Day.
He also hinted that INEC will soon share more details about the election process.
This will include information on how new voters can register, how people can transfer their voting locations, and how to replace lost or damaged voter cards.
“In the coming weeks, the Commission will provide details of other electoral activities, including the registration of new voters, transfer of voters and the replacement of lost or damaged PVCs,” Yakubu said.
He promised that a detailed timetable and schedule for the election will be available on INEC’s website and social media platforms soon.
INEC’s announcement of the election date marks the beginning of what is expected to be a highly contested race for the governorship seat in Anambra State.
Political parties are expected to start preparing their campaigns, and candidates will soon begin emerging.
