The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has issued a serious warning against calls for a military coup in Nigeria.
This warning follows the spread of a viral video on social media that urges the military to take over from the current administration led by President Bola Tinubu.
In a statement released on Monday, the military made it clear that advocating for a coup is a treasonable offense.
Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, the Director of Defence Information, spoke about the military’s commitment to democracy.
“The military is steadfastly committed to the preservation and advancement of our democracy,” Gusau said.
He emphasized that the military is loyal to President Tinubu’s government.
“The military remains focused on fulfilling its statutory responsibilities of protecting the nation’s integrity,” he added.
The DHQ has directed security agencies to take action against anyone promoting unconstitutional changes in Nigeria.
Gusau’s remarks come at a time of rising tensions in the country.
Many citizens have expressed concerns about the state of the economy and governance.
The calls for a coup reflect a growing dissatisfaction among some segments of the population.
This dissatisfaction has been fueled by high inflation rates and security challenges across the nation.
The military’s firm stance against these calls is an attempt to reassure the public of its commitment to democracy.
According to the military, any attempt to incite a coup could destabilize the country further.
The statement from the DHQ makes it clear that the military will not support any moves that undermine Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
Gusau noted that the military has a constitutional duty to uphold democracy and protect the nation.
“The military will not stand by and allow anyone to jeopardize the democratic process in Nigeria,” he warned.
The circulation of the video has raised alarms among various sectors of society.
Many Nigerians are concerned that such rhetoric could lead to unrest.
Political analysts are warning that calls for military intervention could have serious consequences.
“Calls for a coup are dangerous,” said political analyst Dr. Ayo Iwunor.
“They undermine the very fabric of our democracy and can lead to violence and instability.”
Gusau’s statement reflects the military’s commitment to addressing the concerns of citizens.
He urged the public to be cautious about the information they consume online.
“Citizens must be aware of the dangers of misinformation and its potential to incite violence,” he cautioned.
The military’s loyalty to the elected government is crucial for maintaining stability in Nigeria.
As Nigeria faces numerous challenges, including insecurity and economic hardship, the role of the military becomes even more critical.
The DHQ aims to reassure citizens that the military will not engage in politics.
