Nigerian police have detained two people in connection with the sudden death of Mr. Ndifreke Saviour Mark, a longtime aide to former Aviation Minister, Femi Fani-Kayode.
Mark, who had served as Fani-Kayode’s Special Assistant for over 34 years, died unexpectedly in a hotel in Abuja.
The tragic incident took place on Sunday, October 13, 2024, at Mildy Lodge and Apartments, a hotel located in the Garki area of Abuja.
According to reports from the police, Mark had been in the company of another individual at the hotel when he suddenly collapsed.
He was quickly rushed to the Asokoro District Hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
Fani-Kayode, in a statement released on Sunday, expressed his deep sadness over the loss of his devoted aide.
“It is with great sadness that I announce the passing of my devoted Special Assistant, Mr. Ndifreke Saviour Mark, who was with me for no less than 34 years,” Fani-Kayode stated.
Following the mysterious death, the Nigerian police detained the individual who was with Mark at the time of his collapse.
Additionally, the hotel receptionist was also taken into custody to assist in the investigation.
The police are conducting further questioning to determine the circumstances surrounding Mark’s death.
Authorities have also sealed off the hotel for two days, and the room where Mark had stayed remains closed as part of the ongoing investigation.
The manager and the owner of the hotel were invited for questioning earlier in the week, as the police seek answers regarding the incident.
Fani-Kayode shared emotional details about the loss of his longtime aide and described the special bond they shared.
“Mark was like a son to me, and his passing is a huge blow to me and my entire family,” Fani-Kayode said.
He recounted that Mark left his home early that morning, around 5:40 am, to attend morning Mass at the Catholic Church of Assumption in Asokoro, where he was a devoted member.
After Mass, Mark went to the hotel in Garki, where the tragic incident took place.
“He took a room at the hotel and spent some time there with an individual, after which he apparently slumped and died in that individual’s presence,” Fani-Kayode explained.
Fani-Kayode has expressed his commitment to ensuring justice for his late aide.
“I have met with his wife, Barrister Patience Ndifreke-Mark, and his uncle, Mr. Clement Mathias, who represented his family,” Fani-Kayode said.
“I have assured them of my intention to ensure that, if indeed there is any foul play, justice is done and those behind it are brought to book.”
He described Mark as more than just an aide, saying they had shared many dreams and fought many battles together.
“We shared many dreams and aspirations and fought many battles together, shoulder to shoulder,” Fani-Kayode remarked.
Fani-Kayode reflected on Mark’s loyalty, describing him as a dedicated and compassionate individual who could be trusted without question.
“Mark was my most loyal staff and most trusted aide. He was a kind, reliable, and compassionate soul who brought joy to many and was incapable of hurting a fly,” he said.
Fani-Kayode expressed his gratitude for the time they had together, despite the painful loss.
“Now that he has gone, it has left much pain, but I give thanks to God for his life and for the 52 years he spent on earth,” he added.
The former Aviation Minister also pledged his support to Mark’s grieving family during this difficult time.
“I have assured his wife and family of my intention to stand by them and ensure they do not lack or want for anything,” Fani-Kayode said.
He extended his condolences to the family and shared his confidence in the ongoing police investigation, stating that he believes the truth will be uncovered.
“I have absolute confidence in the FCT Police Command to get to the bottom of this matter,” he said. “Once the investigation is complete, we can proceed to bury a man who was like a son to me.”
As the investigation continues, the police are keeping the public informed of any developments.
The hotel room where Mark spent his final hours remains sealed off by law enforcement as part of the inquiry.
The police are currently questioning the detained individuals, including the hotel receptionist, to gather more information about the circumstances leading up to Mark’s death.
While foul play has not been confirmed, the authorities are leaving no stone unturned in their quest for the truth.
Fani-Kayode has been overwhelmed with messages of support from friends, family, and colleagues who have come to mourn with him.
He expressed his deep appreciation for the outpouring of love during this trying time.
“I thank all those who have found the time to come and mourn with us during this difficult time,” Fani-Kayode said.
He also called for prayers for Mark’s family, particularly his wife and two young children, as they navigate their loss.
“May Ndifreke’s precious soul rest in peace, and may the Lord comfort his wife and two beautiful young children,” he concluded.
