A tragic incident occurred in Lagos as the lifeless body of a man was found on the railway tracks in Ikeja, leaving the community in shock.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed that the unidentified man was struck by a moving train in the early hours of Monday. The incident took place near Agege, one of the busiest areas in the state.

The shocking discovery was made by LASEMA’s Eagle Response Team, which responded to an emergency call about a body on the railway tracks.

According to Nosa Okunbor, the head of LASEMA’s public affairs unit, the body was found around 9 a.m.

“Upon arrival of the Eagle Response Team at the scene by 0902hrs, they discovered the body of an adult male laying dead on the railway track,” Okunbor said in a statement.

The man is believed to have been hit by the train earlier in the day. His identity remains unknown, and authorities are working to determine what led to the unfortunate event.

The body was recovered by LASEMA’s operatives, bagged, and handed over to the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU) for transfer to the morgue.

Okunbor added, “The body has been deposited at the morgue, and further investigations will continue to establish the full details surrounding the incident.”

Lagosians, who are accustomed to the busy and sometimes dangerous environment around the railway tracks, were saddened by the news of the man’s death.

The Lagos State government has long warned residents to stay clear of railway tracks, especially when trains are approaching, as these areas pose significant risks.

This latest incident adds to the growing concerns over safety around Lagos railway lines.

Many residents living near the tracks use the space for walking or crossing, often unaware of the dangers posed by oncoming trains. Unfortunately, accidents involving trains are not uncommon in Lagos, as several lives have been lost in similar circumstances.

In recent years, there have been multiple incidents involving people being hit by trains in various parts of the state. Safety experts and local authorities have repeatedly cautioned the public about the risks, but accidents continue to occur.

The Lagos State government has also worked with agencies like LASEMA and the Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC) to promote public awareness of railway safety. However, the warnings often go unheeded.

LASEMA has been commended for its swift action in responding to the incident. The agency’s Eagle Response Team is known for its efficiency in handling emergencies, including accidents on railway tracks.

According to the agency, it has continued to work closely with other bodies such as the Lagos Neighborhood Safety Corps (LNSC) and the NRC to ensure that such incidents are dealt with quickly.

Mr. Okunbor highlighted the importance of collaboration in managing emergencies. “We work with multiple agencies to make sure that these incidents are handled properly, and that the public is safe. Unfortunately, in this case, we could not save the individual involved.”

Mr. Okunbor, speaking on behalf of LASEMA, reiterated the agency’s message to the public: “We urge everyone to be cautious when they are near railway tracks. The danger is real, and it can happen to anyone. Please, always stay alert and stay safe.”

For now, the identity of the man found on the tracks remains unknown, and authorities are appealing to the public for any information that could help identify him.
