Elon Musk’s internet company, Starlink, has made significant strides in Nigeria’s internet market, emerging as the country’s third-largest Internet Service Provider (ISP) by subscriber number in the fourth quarter (Q4) of 2023, according to data released by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).
The latest report from the NCC reveals that Starlink witnessed a remarkable surge in active customers, reaching 23,897 subscribers by the end of Q4 2023.
This represents a staggering 113% increase from the 11,207 customers reported in the previous quarter, solidifying Starlink’s position as one of the leading ISPs in Nigeria.
Despite its relatively higher costs compared to local ISPs, Starlink has garnered widespread interest among Nigerians since its introduction in January 2023.
The company’s satellite internet service, known for its ubiquity and reliability, has particularly appealed to users in areas with poor internet connectivity.
While Starlink’s growth is impressive, Spectranet and FiberOne maintained their dominance in the Nigerian market. Spectranet, one of the oldest ISPs in the country, leads with 113,869 active customers, followed by FiberOne with 27,000 active users at the end of 2023.
Starlink’s rapid ascent highlights the changing dynamics of Nigeria’s internet landscape and underscores the growing demand for high-speed, reliable connectivity across the country.
Despite facing competition from established local providers, Starlink’s innovative approach and technological prowess have positioned it as a major player in Nigeria’s evolving digital ecosystem
