Tensions have surged in Umuahala and Umuorie villages of Asa in Ukwa West Local Government Area (LGA) of Abia State following the tragic death of Miss Vivian Ocheze Munachi, a crane operator at Inner Galaxy Steel Company Nigeria Limited.
The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, May 21, 2024, has ignited controversy and protests within the community.
Inner Galaxy, a Chinese-owned company, has vehemently denied allegations of foul play surrounding Munachi’s death.
In a statement released by the company’s Public Affairs Manager, Ceng Jing, the company asserted that Munachi’s demise was the result of an unfortunate accident.
According to the company’s account, Munachi fell asleep while operating the crane, leading to a loss of control and ultimately causing her to fall.
Furthermore, the company refuted rumours circulating in the media regarding a romantic relationship between Munachi and a Chinese staff member. Mr. Ceng Jing emphasized that there was no evidence to support such claims.
However, the tragic incident has sparked an outbreak of violence in the area, with reports of looting and vandalism targeting Inner Galaxy’s property.
The company condemned these actions, attributing them to individuals spreading false information and capitalizing on the tragedy.
Meanwhile, allegations have surfaced from the community accusing Mr. G.Z. Zhen, the manager of Inner Galaxy, of pushing Munachi from the crane, resulting in her death. The motive behind Zhen’s alleged actions remains unclear.
The host communities are enraged, citing concerns of slave labor and other inhumane treatments inflicted upon Nigerian staff by foreigners working at Inner Galaxy.
Additionally, grievances have been raised regarding inadequate wages despite employees working overtime.
In response to the escalating situation, armed security personnel have been deployed to guard the factory and prevent further unrest.
The Abia State Police Command has confirmed receiving reports of the incident and stated that investigations are ongoing.
