The campaign team of Peter Obi, the presidential candidate for the Labour Party, has issued a clarification regarding his recent visit to the party’s secretariat in Abuja.
Contrary to some media reports, the visit was aimed at reconciliation rather than endorsement of the party leadership.
Yunusa Tanko, the spokesman for Obi’s campaign, addressed the issue in a statement released in Abuja on Wednesday.
Tanko emphasized that the purpose of Obi’s visit, along with his supporters, was to foster reconciliation within the party, not to endorse any particular group within the Labour Party.
Tanko refuted reports suggesting that Obi’s visit indicated an endorsement of the current party leadership and the National Working Committee (NWC) members.
He reiterated that Obi’s primary focus was on uniting the party and ensuring that all members felt included and supported.
Furthermore, Tanko highlighted that Obi’s visit was part of a broader consultation effort aimed at achieving peace within the Labour Party.
This included a meeting with the political arms of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) on Wednesday, as part of Obi’s ongoing efforts to unify the party.
In response to Tanko’s statement, the leadership of the Labour Party issued a reaction, acknowledging Obi’s efforts towards reconciliation within the party.
They commended his decision to reconcile all aggrieved members and stakeholders, aligning with the party’s call for unity and rebuilding.
While some quarters speculated that Obi’s visit could be interpreted as an endorsement of the current party leadership, the Labour Party emphasized the importance of unity and cooperation in the face of challenges.
They urged the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to view the party as an ally in the battle to rescue Nigeria from the shackles of maladministration.
