Soldiers of the Nigerian Army, aided by the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies rescued eight additional students from the Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTECH), Osara, Kogi State, a statement issued by the Army said on Sunday.
The statement, issued by through the Nigerian Army handle on X.com, said the security forces carried out the rescue in the dense forests near Oro Ago Village, Kwara State.
According to the statement, the successful operation followed an intense clearance mission conducted by troops and security operatives deployed for counter-terrorism operations in the South West.
“Through meticulous search efforts spanning the Gbugu, Pategi, and Oro Ago Axis, as well as neighbouring areas like Babasango and Babanla, the troops pinpointed the location of the kidnapped students,” the statement adds.
“The safety and security of our citizens, especially those at risk of terrorist activities, remain our utmost priority,” stated Colonel Ahmed Yusuf, spokesperson for the Nigerian Army.
“This rescue operation is a testament to our unwavering commitment to safeguarding lives and restoring peace in troubled regions.”
The army said as the rescue operation unfolded swiftly and troops closed in on the terrorists’ hideout, the captors abandoned their hostages and fled into the forest.
It says, “The rescued students, now freed from the clutches of terror, have been safely evacuated and handed over to the Kogi State Government authorities for further care and reunion with their families.
Analysts say the latest rescue mission underscores the efficacy of joint efforts by security agencies in combating terrorism and criminality across Nigeria.
The Army urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the nearest security agency.
“This operation underscores the commitment of the Nigerian Army and other security agencies to ensuring the safety and security of citizens, particularly in regions plagued by terrorist activities.
“The swift and decisive action of the troops has not only saved lives but also sent a strong message to terrorist elements operating in the area.
“The Nigerian Army enjoins the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the nearest security agency, as collective efforts are crucial in the fight against terrorism and criminality in the region.”
The rescue occurred a week after the Army held a ceremony at the Nigerian Army Corps of Supply and Transport (NACST) to bid farewell to seven retired Generals.
The event, held at the Nigerian Army School of Supply and Transport (NASST) in Isiohor Barracks, Benin City.
Major General Victor Offiong (Retired), the Reviewing Officer of the pulling-out ceremony, delivered a heartfelt farewell address and expressed profound gratitude to the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja.
Gen. Lagbaja was represented by Major General Erema Akerejola, Chief of Logistics (Army), and Major General Adekunle Adebayo Adeyinka, Commander NACST.
Major General Offiong also extended appreciation to esteemed personalities within the Supply and Transport family, including retired Major Generals R.I. Adoba, A.A. Shuaibu, and A.B.M. Gana, for their presence and support on this significant occasion.
Reflecting on his illustrious career, Offiong emphasized the challenges and triumphs experienced during his service.
He urged the current leadership to build upon past achievements, harnessing innovation and fostering professionalism within the Corps of Supply and Transport.
Offiong advocated for the integration of modern technology and the development of leadership skills among junior commanders, ensuring the Corps continues to excel in its statutory roles.
He reassured the NACST of the retired generals’ unwavering support and commitment to the Corps’ success.
The Pulling Out Ceremony encompassed several notable activities, including tree planting, street naming, and the commissioning of new projects at NASST.
The event ended with a Gala Night, honoring the retired generals for their dedicated service.
The gala was graced by the Executive Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, represented by Honorable Kingsley Uwagbale, Commissioner for Security and Safety.
Distinguished guests included high-ranking officers, past and present, from Defence Headquarters, Army Headquarters, and Headquarters NACST, as well as Commandants of Nigerian Army institutions and other esteemed dignitaries.
