South Africa’s ruling African National Congress (ANC), which lost significant ground in the recent general election, has reached a significant agreement with rival parties to form a Government of National Unity (GNU).

The ANC, Democratic Alliance (DA) alongside the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) signed the agreement after two weeks of intense negotiations.

Reflecting on the historic accord, the DA in a statement issued Thursday emphasized the transformative nature of the agreement.

The party said, “Today, the 14th of June 2024, will go down in the annals of history as the start of a new chapter for our beloved country.”

The agreement outlines a shared commitment to upholding the Constitution, addressing key national issues, and fostering economic growth and job creation.

The agreement positions the DA as a key player in both national and provincial governments, including influential roles in cabinet and parliamentary committees.

The party says this newfound responsibility underscores the party’s evolution from a minority opposition to a pivotal force in governance.

Acknowledging the challenges ahead, the party emphasised the importance of unity and perseverance.

“None of us should expect these problems to be solved overnight,” they stated. “But the DA will be there with you, the people of South Africa, for every step along the way.”
