The National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has commended the signing of the Electoral Act 2026 into law, describing it as a major step toward strengthening Nigeria’s democratic process ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a communiqué issued after its meeting in Awka, Anambra State, the party praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for granting swift assent to the bill. The meeting took place at the party’s South-East Regional Secretariat and focused on key political developments, internal party matters, and national issues.

APGA said the new law would provide clarity and direction for election planning, especially for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which is responsible for conducting elections in the country.

According to the party, the timely passage and signing of the Electoral Act would help avoid confusion and delays that often affect election preparations. It added that early clarity on electoral rules would allow political parties and stakeholders to better organise their activities ahead of the 2027 polls.

The party particularly welcomed key reforms introduced in the new law. It highlighted provisions relating to the conduct of party primaries and the digitization of party membership databases.

APGA described these changes as being in line with global best practices. It said the reforms would improve transparency within political parties and promote internal democracy, which has often been a concern in Nigeria’s political system.

For many years, disputes arising from party primaries have led to court cases and internal crises across different political parties. By introducing clearer rules and encouraging digital record-keeping, the Electoral Act 2026 is expected to reduce such conflicts.

The NWC also encouraged party members and new entrants to take advantage of its ongoing electronic membership registration and revalidation exercise. It said the exercise would strengthen the party’s structure and prepare it for future elections.

As part of its plans for the 2027 general elections, APGA announced that it would hold stakeholders’ summits and conferences across Nigeria’s six geo-political zones. These meetings are expected to bring together party leaders, members, and supporters to discuss strategies and build unity.

The party also approved its timetable and guidelines for the 2026 primaries. These primaries will determine the candidates who will represent APGA in various elective positions in the next general elections.

By releasing its schedule early, the party aims to ensure a smooth and transparent process. Political analysts say early planning could give APGA an advantage as parties begin to position themselves for the next electoral cycle.

Despite its commendation of the new Electoral Act, APGA raised serious concerns about the security situation in the country. The party noted that ongoing insecurity in several regions has led to the loss of lives and destruction of property.

It called on President Tinubu to intensify efforts to address the problem and restore peace across the country. According to the party, a secure environment is necessary for credible elections and national development.

Nigeria has faced different security challenges in recent years, including banditry, insurgency, and communal clashes. These issues have affected many communities, especially in parts of Northern Nigeria, and have raised concerns about voter safety during elections.

While acknowledging the efforts of security agencies, APGA urged them to do more. It specifically commended the Nigeria Police Force and the Armed Forces of Nigeria for their work in tackling insecurity, but stressed that sustained action is needed.

The NWC also took important decisions regarding its internal structure. It announced the immediate dissolution of its Federal Capital Territory (FCT) chapter leadership, including the State Working Committee, local government executives, and ward officials.

The party said the decision was necessary to address ongoing disturbances within the FCT chapter. It added that a caretaker committee would be set up and its details forwarded to INEC in line with party rules.

This move is seen as part of efforts to maintain discipline and unity within the party ahead of the primaries and the general elections.

APGA also warned its members to adhere strictly to party guidelines and maintain discipline. It said any form of misconduct during the primaries would attract sanctions.

The party used the opportunity to congratulate the Governor of Anambra State, Chukwuma Soludo, on his swearing-in for a second term in office.

APGA attributed his re-election victory to his performance during his first term, noting that his development projects and policies had earned him the support of the people.

The party urged him to continue delivering on his promises and work towards making Anambra a modern and prosperous state. It described its vision for the state as that of a “livable and smart megacity.”

Soludo, a former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, has focused on infrastructure development, economic reforms, and urban renewal in Anambra State.

The NWC also addressed the issue of alleged defection involving Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, who represents Abia South Senatorial District.

The party accused Abaribe of defecting unlawfully and called on the Senate to declare his seat vacant in line with constitutional provisions.

It praised the leadership of the Senate under Godswill Akpabio for defending democratic principles and constitutional order.

Defections have long been a controversial issue in Nigerian politics, often leading to legal battles and debates about the rights of elected officials and political parties.

Overall, APGA described the Electoral Act 2026 as a positive development for Nigeria’s democracy. It said the law would improve the credibility of elections and strengthen democratic institutions.

The party also reaffirmed its commitment to democratic values and national development. It urged Nigerians to remain engaged in the political process and support efforts to build a better country.

As preparations for the 2027 elections gather pace, developments such as the new Electoral Act and internal party reforms are expected to shape the political landscape.

For APGA, the focus now is on strengthening its structure, resolving internal issues, and positioning itself as a strong contender in the next general elections.
