The Kano State government has reiterated its stance on the status of the 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, following a crucial court ruling.

Despite legal challenges, the government affirms that Sanusi II remains the rightful emir, in accordance with the recent verdict by the Federal High Court.

The announcement was made by the State’s Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, Haruna Isa Dederi, alongside the Secretary to the State Government, Baffa Bichi, at a press briefing held at the Government House.

Dederi addressed reporters, emphasizing the government’s position in light of the court’s decision.

“You will recall that at our last press briefing, we had informed you that we would keep you posted relating to any further development in respect of our emirate cases,” Dederi stated. “Today 20th June, 2024, the Federal High Court No. 1, Kano had passed its ruling in respect of the case before it.”

Dederi continued, elaborating on the implications of the court ruling: “By implication, this means that Muhammadu Sanusi II remains the Emir of Kano. The judge also granted our application for the stay of proceedings until the Court of Appeal deals with the appeal before it on jurisdiction.”

He further clarified the government’s directive regarding the former Emir, Aminu Ado Bayero, who was recently deposed: “Following this Court’s ruling, Kano State Government has directed the State Commissioner of Police to remove the deposed Emir from the Government property where he is trespassing.”

The legal battle stems from the Kano Emirates Council (Repeal) Law, 2024, which was passed by the State House of Assembly and subsequently signed into law by Governor Abba K. Yusuf. The court’s decision upholds the validity of this law, affirming the actions taken by the government in restructuring the emirate system, including the deposition of several emirs.

In conclusion, Dederi called for peace and unity among the people of Kano: “I want to congratulate and call on the good people of Kano State to remain peaceful and celebrate the success of the people without any hitch. May Allah SWT continue to protect our State and our government.”
