The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Chief Justice Olukayode Ariwoola is scheduled to inaugurate 12 new judges to the High Court on Wednesday.
This ceremony marks a pivotal moment in bolstering the judicial capacity of the FCT, bringing the total number of High Court judges to 69.
According to a statement released by Festus Akande, the Director of Press at the Supreme Court, the swearing-in ceremony will commence at 10 a.m. in the Main Courtroom of the Supreme Court.
The statement says the appointment of these 12 judges follows a rigorous selection process spearheaded by the National Judicial Council (NJC).
The NJC, during its 105th meeting held in May, recommended a total of 86 candidates for various judicial positions across federal and state courts.
The candidates recommended for the FCT High Court underwent thorough scrutiny by the council’s Interview Committee on the Appointment of Judicial Officers.
Among the newly appointed judges are distinguished legal professionals hailing from diverse states across Nigeria.
Buetnaan Mandy Bassi from Plateau State, Ademuyiwa Olakunle Oyeyipo from Kwara State, and Bamodu Odunayo Olutomi from Lagos State are among those set to take their oaths. Also included are Iheabunike Anumaenwe Godwin from Imo State, Odo Celestine Obinna from Enugu State, and Hauwa Lawal Gummi from Zamfara State.
The remaining appointees are Sarah Benjamin Inesu Avoh (Bayelsa State), Maryam Iye Yusuf (Kogi State), Ariwoola Oluwakemi Victoria (Oyo State), Lesley Nkesi Belema Wike (Rivers State), Ibrahim Tanko Munirat (Bauchi State), and Abdulrahman Usman (Taraba State).
The addition of these 12 judges is expected to alleviate the workload currently borne by the existing 57 judges of the FCT High Court.
