The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr Kayode Egbetokun, has said that the best job in the world is the job of a policeman.
The IGP, who spoke during a one-day working visit to the Edo Command on Wednesday, also emphasised ongoing efforts to improve the living conditions and benefits for officers.
Addressing officers and men of the Edo Command, IGP Egbetokun highlighted several initiatives aimed at boosting police welfare.
He particularly mentioned the recent launch of the police housing scheme, designed to provide affordable housing to officers across all ranks.
“The Federal Government is committed to improving police welfare, and we are doing our best to ensure that policemen have improved welfare,” Egbetokun stated.
“With the police housing scheme, we aim to ensure that every officer, after serving for 35 years, can retire with a home of their own.”
The IGP called on all police operatives to remain dedicated to delivering excellent service in their duties to the public.
He underscored the joint objectives of the Federal Government and police administration to build a police force capable of effectively responding to evolving crime dynamics.
“Our goal is to have a well-positioned police force that can tackle the dynamics of crimes and criminalities in society,” he added. “We are receiving significant support from the federal government to achieve this.”
Further, Egbetokun mentioned ongoing efforts to improve pension benefits for retired officers and detailed various insurance schemes available to police personnel.
These include the group life assurance scheme, the group personal accident scheme, the IGP Family welfare scheme, and the Nigeria Police welfare insurance scheme.
“These initiatives are all geared towards benefiting our officers and ensuring their well-being,” he said.
The IGP also urged officers to maintain transparency and honesty in their interactions with the public.
He emphasised the importance of integrity and public trust in their service.
“Serve the people to the best of your ability, and show commitment to the highest standard of integrity and public trust,” Egbetokun advised.
“The job of a policeman is rewarding, but it depends on how you perform your duties.”
Earlier, the State Commissioner of Police, CP Funsho Adegboye, had briefed the IGP on the Command’s achievements, particularly in apprehending high-profile criminals.
The visit concluded with the commissioning of the newly-built ultra-modern Benin Area Command headquarters located on Upper Sakponba Road, marking a significant milestone for the Edo Command.
