2024 Olympics: Brazil Triumphs Over Nigeria in Women’s Football Opener

In their opening match of the 2024 Paris Olympics Women’s Football event, Brazil secured a hard-fought victory against Nigeria with a 1-0 win.

The two-time silver medalists clinched the win thanks to Gabi Nunes’ decisive goal, which came from an assist by the legendary Marta.

The match saw Brazil dominate possession, yet Nigeria’s Super Falcons put up a resilient fight, especially through their captain Rasheedat Ajibade, who created several key chances but lacked sufficient support upfront.

Despite their efforts, Nigeria was unable to find the back of the net.

In the first half, Brazil’s Gabi Nunes scored in the 37th minute, converting a precise pass from Marta.

Rasheedat Ajibade led the Falcons onto the turf of the Stade Matmut Atlantique, marking Nigeria’s return to the tournament after a 16-year hiatus.

Ajibade displayed exceptional leadership with her dynamic runs down the left flank, but her teammates struggled to capitalize on the opportunities she created.

Her final pass in the 7th minute was blocked, and a promising double-barreled attack in the 16th minute, initiated by Ajibade, saw Chinwendu Ihezuo’s shot blocked and Christy Ucheibe’s follow-up punched away.

Chiamaka Nnadozie, Nigeria’s goalkeeper, was pivotal in keeping the Super Falcons in the game.

She made crucial saves, notably from Portilho in the 20th minute and a long-range drive by Gabi Nunes five minutes later.

Deborah Abiodun’s missed shot over the goalpost in the 80th minute was one of Nigeria’s closest attempts.

The match had its fair share of drama, with a disallowed goal by Marta shortly after Nunes’ strike.

Brazil had numerous chances to extend their lead, with efforts from Ludmila and Marta hitting the post and being saved by Nigerian goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie.

Nigeria pushed for an equalizer until the very end, with Ajibade’s attempt in stoppage time being thwarted. The Super Falcons will need to regroup quickly as they prepare to face the reigning Women’s World Cup champions,
