The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) Limited’s career portal which crashed just two hours after the announcement of their latest recruitment drive is now up and running again.
The surge in traffic led to slow load times and accessibility issues for many applicants eager to apply for the new positions.
When Meteor Nigeria checked the web portal, Friday morning, it was unaccessible and a blank 403 error page had replaced the portal’s landing page.
However, a subsequent check hours later showed that the website had been restored.
A tweet by the corporation’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer Femi Soneye, gave hints that the website was back up.
He said, “Our team is working assiduously to accommodate the surge of applications. While we acknowledge the keen interest of Nigerians in having an exciting career experience with us, we reassure all Nigerians of a transparent and merit-based recruitment process. We therefore encourage capable Nigerians to take maximum advantage of this unique opportunity.”
The corporation announced a recruitment drive at around 6am on Friday via a statement issued on X.com by Soneye.
“NNPC Ltd is pleased to announce that we are currently hiring for multiple positions across various departments. We are seeking talented and dedicated individuals to join our team. Visit our careers page for application instructions,” the statement announcing the recruitment said.
About two hours later, Soneye returned to X.com to acknowledge the complaints from Nigerians who had attempted to register on the job portal to no avail.
He said, “Due to unprecedented traffic to the NNPC Ltd career page from applicants applying for vacancies, the site is currently experiencing slow load times.
“Our techs are working diligently to rectify the problem. Please be assured that the application process deadline remains Aug 20, 2024.”
NNPC Ltd’s recruitment announcement includes multiple openings across various departments. The organization is seeking talented and dedicated individuals to join their team, promising a fair and transparent selection process.
Public Reactions on Twitter
The news of the site crash and the subsequent assurance by NNPC sparked diverse reactions on social media.
While some Nigerians expressed excitement and hope, others voiced frustration over technical issues and scepticism about the transparency of the hiring process.
ACHO (@achomuziq) voiced strong criticism: “What a shame. A whole NNPC cannot get enough bandwidth to accommodate their site traffic. It’s their way of life. This post is just a smoke screen. They would have employed their cronies already. Like I always say, nothing good comes out of Sodom. Same story always.”
Conversely, XYZ praised the initiative: “Kudos to NNPC Ltd for offering a platform for talented individuals to thrive and make a meaningful impact in the energy industry! This recruitment drive is a testament to the company’s commitment to excellence and growth. I urge all qualified candidates to apply and be part of a team that’s shaping the future of energy in Nigeria.”
Suraj Mu’azu Muhd (@Souraj_M_Muhd) shared his thoughts: “Dear graduates, NNPC has opened its portal for enrollment. Every Nigerian is entitled to apply for the vacancies. I wish you all the best. I have an interest but lack a clear connection, so I can’t waste time applying. Note that it requires a sound and bounded connection.”
Humanity First (@HabilaIshaq) offered a heartfelt message: “Good day, for those asking about NNPC jobs, they have opened the portal. My guy, if you know that only Almighty you have, please kindly apply, and if you know that you get a big politician that can facilitate a job for you at NNPC, kindly apply too. May Almighty help WE poor children.”
However, Adetola (@adetoola) criticized the technical shortcomings of the portal: “NNPC is so useless that they didn’t hire professionals to build the job portal. The careers page is timing out, and when you scale that hurdle, the job portal has the debug module exposed. You can virtually see all the site internals, including database logs.”
Ajah Meremi (@UmarMeremi) defended the corporation, emphasizing its commitment to merit-based hiring: “NNPC’s commitment to transparency has far-reaching implications, not only for the organization but also for the nation. By prioritizing merit and talent, NNPC is building a workforce that is capable, innovative, and dedicated to driving Nigeria’s energy sector forward.” He also urged qualified Nigerians to apply: “Don’t let anyone discourage you, you won’t lose anything by applying. Best wishes.”
R! (@iamrildwanbello) advised against listening to sceptics: “Twitter people will whine about the NNPC hiring advert and say that it is a scam. Don’t listen to them. Apply and ace your interviews.”
Northerner (@Northerner0) encouraged persistence despite the issues: “I suggest you go ahead and apply if the site is working. No harm in trying, just apply and stay positive. Apply, keep hope alive, say your prayers, and wait. If luck isn’t on your side, life continues!”
Critics like Mimi Jaja (@omimika) expressed deep distrust: “Believe the ECONOMIC SABOTEUR called NNPC at your peril. The crooks have allocated the job slots to their children, wards, political cronies, and politicians.”
The technical flaws also drew the ire of many, including ultimate_j (@Ajayiolubunmij), who bluntly stated: “Fix the site.”
The debate continues as Nigerians weigh their chances and frustrations with the NNPC recruitment process.
