Imo Governor Praises Igbo for Shunning Protest

    Share

Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has expressed gratitude to the people of the southeastern region for not participating in the nationwide protests that began on August 1.

Although protests broke out in parts of South-South, the North and South West, the South East region has been largely quiet,

In a statement, Uzodimma commended the region for prioritizing safety and stability over the right to protest. He praised the residents for recognizing the risks posed by potential hijackers and violent groups targeting peaceful demonstrators.

Uzodimma noted that while the right to peaceful protest is important, the choice to focus on maintaining order demonstrates commendable prudence.

The governor criticized those who, he claimed, had contributed to the country’s economic problems and are now allegedly sponsoring the protests instead of collaborating with the federal government to resolve these issues.

He attributed this unrest to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s efforts to dismantle a corrupt system exploiting national resources.

Uzodimma voiced support for President Tinubu, highlighting the president’s compassion and determination in addressing inherited economic challenges.

He called on citizens to support the president’s efforts and engage in dialogue as the best means to address their grievances.

In a related development, Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun addressed the violent turn of the protests, which began on Thursday.

Egbetokun described the events as a “mass uprising” rather than a peaceful protest, noting widespread violence and looting.

The IGP detailed that despite prior warnings and police advice to confine protests to specific areas for safety, many demonstrators defied these measures.

He reported significant damage and looting across various states, including Kano, Borno, Yobe, Kaduna, and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

The destruction involved attacks on police stations, government buildings, and retail establishments.

Egbetokun also highlighted incidents of terrorism, including an explosive device neutralized in Lagos and a deadly explosion in Borno State that killed four and injured 34 others.

He urged citizens to heed security warnings and cooperate with authorities, emphasizing that the police, supported by other security agencies, are prepared to maintain order.
