The Federal Government of Nigeria has commenced urgent repairs on the Lagos-Sango-Abeokuta Expressway, a crucial route for many commuters.
This announcement comes after years of complaints regarding the deteriorating condition of the road, which has seen significant wear and tear.
Mrs. Olukorede Kesha, the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos State, inspected the ongoing palliative repairs on the damaged sections of the road.
The inspection took place on Monday, highlighting the government’s commitment to addressing the situation.
The expressway stretches about 18 kilometers within Lagos State, with the repairs focusing on approximately seven kilometers of severely damaged sections.
Kesha acknowledged the road’s poor state, stating, “You all know that this road has been bad for some time, and the ministry has been trying its best to work in conjunction with the concessionaire.”
She explained that the road had been concessioned, leading to delays due to a transition from the previous government to the current one.
To expedite repairs, Kesha noted that the Federal Government did not want to wait for all bureaucratic issues to be resolved.
“The honourable minister has directed that we come here and do, at least, palliative works pending when the issues will be resolved,” she added.
These palliative works are aimed at providing immediate relief to motorists and commuters who use this busy route daily.
The palliative repairs will focus on filling large holes, known as “drum holes,” laying stone bases, and applying a binding layer for a smoother driving experience.
Kesha emphasized the importance of addressing the current road condition, saying, “We are going to fill all the drum holes.”
She further explained, “We are already putting boulders, after which a stone base will be put on top of it. Then, we have a binding layer to bind all those elements of road together.”
