As Rivers State gears up for the October 5, 2024, local government elections, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has made a strong call to the people of the state to turn out en masse and exercise their right to vote. The party insists that this election is a crucial moment for the people to assert their democratic rights and participate fully in the process of choosing their local leaders.
In a press statement released on October 4, 2024, and signed by the PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, the party emphasized the importance of the people’s involvement in the election. The PDP reminded the residents of Rivers State that local government elections are essential in a democracy and urged them to not be swayed by any threats or attempts to undermine the electoral process.
“The people of Rivers State must come out on October 5 and vote for their local government representatives,” the statement read. “This is your constitutional right. Your participation in this election is your voice in how your local communities will be governed. Don’t allow anyone to take that right away from you.”
The PDP further highlighted that the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has expressed its readiness to conduct the election. The commission has assured the public that all necessary materials and arrangements are in place for a smooth and transparent electoral process. The party pointed out that no court has the power to stop the election under the provisions of the Electoral Act, 2022.
In its statement, the PDP referenced Section 84(15) of the Electoral Act, 2022, which states: “Nothing in this section shall empower the courts to stop the holding of primaries or general elections, under the Act pending the determination of a suit.” This, the party argued, is a clear legal provision that ensures the uninterrupted conduct of elections.
According to the PDP, any attempt to obstruct the election would be against the constitution and the democratic principles that guide Nigeria as a nation. The party warned against efforts by any group or individual to interfere with the people’s right to vote and elect their leaders.
The PDP also expressed strong concerns about the role of the police in the upcoming election, accusing the All Progressives Congress (APC)-controlled police force of attempting to disrupt the process. The statement alleged that police operatives recently invaded RSIEC facilities in an effort to prevent the election from taking place. The PDP called this action an “affront to democracy” and condemned it in the strongest terms.
“This is a direct assault on the will of the people of Rivers State,” the PDP said. “The police should not be used as a tool to subvert the democratic process. The people of Rivers are determined to exercise their right to vote, and no amount of intimidation will stop them.”
The PDP’s statement went beyond addressing the residents of Rivers State. It also called on Nigerians and the international community to be vigilant and hold the APC and the police accountable for any disruptions to the election. The PDP warned that any breakdown of law and order in the state would be the responsibility of those who seek to interfere with the electoral process.
“The Inspector General of Police must ensure that the police remain neutral and professional during the election,” the PDP stated. “His duty is to provide a safe and secure environment for the people to cast their votes, not to take sides. Any action that undermines the election will be seen as an attack on democracy.”
Local government elections, while sometimes overlooked in comparison to national elections, are a vital part of Nigeria’s democratic system. Local councils play a critical role in delivering services and governance at the grassroots level. They are responsible for areas such as education, healthcare, infrastructure development, and maintaining law and order in communities. In Rivers State, the upcoming election will see the selection of leaders for the state’s 23 local government areas.
The PDP emphasized that this election will have a direct impact on the lives of residents, as local government leaders are the closest level of government to the people. “Your local leaders will be responsible for addressing the issues that affect your daily lives. This election is not just about politics, it’s about your future, your community, and your family’s well-being,” the party said.
The PDP also praised the people of Rivers State for their resilience and determination to defend their democratic rights. Despite the challenges and attempts to derail the election, the party noted that the people remain steadfast in their commitment to democracy.
“The people of Rivers have always been known for their courage and their commitment to justice,” the statement read. “We salute your steadfastness and your resolve to stand up for your rights. You are the true custodians of democracy, and your vote is your voice.”
The PDP assured the people that the party stands with them in their desire for a peaceful and fair election. “We are committed to ensuring that this election reflects the will of the people and that those elected to lead our local councils are chosen through a transparent and democratic process,” the party said.
