The Nigeria Police Force has issued a stern warning against the unauthorized use of its uniform after a social media personality, Martins Otse, popularly known as “VDM,” posted a video of himself wearing police attire.

The police, in a statement released on Thursday, condemned Otse’s actions, declaring that such behavior undermines the integrity of the force.

The video, which circulated widely on social media, sparked reactions from both the public and the police.

The police statement, signed by the force’s public relations officer, highlighted that wearing an official uniform without authorization is a serious offense.

“The Nigeria Police Force unequivocally condemns the unauthorized use of police uniforms and accoutrements by Mr. Martins Otse,” the statement read.

The police emphasized that using the uniform for entertainment or without permission violates Nigerian laws, including Section 251 of the Criminal Code Law and Section 133 of the Penal Code Law.

The laws state that impersonating a police officer or using official symbols without approval is a criminal act.

The police force stated that Otse’s actions misrepresent the force and contribute to the erosion of trust between the police and the public.

“Unauthorized use of these items undermines the values and integrity of the force and will not be tolerated,” the statement read.

An investigation has been launched to determine the source of the police uniform used in Otse’s video.

According to the statement, this investigation will seek to uncover how Otse obtained the uniform and any involvement of police personnel.

Authorities have said they will address the case with full seriousness to set a clear example.

The statement also noted that the Nigeria Police Force recognizes and supports young Nigerians’ creativity in the content creation space.

However, they reminded content creators that the misuse of police symbols or uniforms is against the law.

While it is not uncommon for comedians, actors, and online personalities to wear uniforms in films or skits, legal experts stress that formal permissions must be sought.

The Nigeria Police Force has previously warned about impersonations, stating that they damage public perception of the force.

Some legal experts say that such use of uniforms is not just a “harmless costume choice.”

“It’s more than just wearing a piece of clothing,” said Emeka Igbokwe, a legal analyst.

“Uniforms and badges represent authority, and when worn improperly, they mislead the public.”

The police have previously dealt with similar cases, including when actors were reprimanded for using uniforms in films without approval.

Legal provisions around police uniforms are strict to prevent unauthorized individuals from taking advantage of the public’s trust in the force’s symbols.

Section 251 of the Criminal Code Law specifically addresses the unlawful wearing of uniforms or badges associated with the armed forces, police, or other official institutions.

The penalty for breaking these laws ranges from fines to imprisonment, depending on the severity of the offense.

The Penal Code Law, on the other hand, addresses impersonation of public officers and illegal possession of items related to these offices.

The Nigeria Police Force’s actions come at a time when the use of official symbols in content creation is becoming common in Nigeria.

Many content creators believe that wearing police or military attire adds realism to their videos.

However, the police insist that these symbols are not mere costumes and should be used only with due permission.
