RCCG Suspends Two Pastors Amid Homosexuality Allegations

The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) has suspended two ministers over allegations of homosexuality.

In a memo dated October 28, 2024, RCCG National Overseer Pastor Sunday Akande announced the temporary suspension of Pastor Ayorinde AdeBello and Deacon Oke Mayowa.

This internal memo was obtained by Stonix News and outlines the church’s immediate response to the accusations.

Pastor Akande stated that the allegations would be investigated thoroughly by the church.

He assured church members and the public that RCCG is committed to addressing the allegations with “the seriousness they deserve.”

“Our mission is deeply rooted in the teachings of the Bible,” Akande emphasized. “We must uphold these principles in every action we take.”

The RCCG has long maintained a conservative stance on issues it considers moral, including homosexuality.

The church’s teachings on this subject are grounded in specific biblical scriptures.

For example, Leviticus 18:22 describes same-sex relations as an “abomination.”

Similarly, 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 warns that the “unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God.”

For the RCCG, these passages are essential guidelines for its doctrine and mission.

In light of these beliefs, Pastor Akande’s directive for a thorough investigation reinforces the church’s commitment to traditional values.

The RCCG, which is one of Nigeria’s largest and most influential Christian organisations, has consistently emphasized strict adherence to its interpretation of biblical principles.

“Discipline and integrity are pillars of our ministry,” Pastor Akande noted in the memo. “We cannot compromise on these values.”

The memo instructs the Special Assistant to the General Overseer on Administration to ensure that the investigation proceeds with confidentiality and respect.

Pastor Akande requested that the investigation be concluded within two weeks.

He also directed that both AdeBello and Mayowa, as well as any other individuals named, should abstain from all church activities during the investigation.

This directive is intended to prevent any potential interference with the inquiry.

“The suspension is purely a precautionary measure,” Akande explained. “It does not imply guilt but is necessary to uphold the integrity of our ministry.”

This is not the first time RCCG has dealt with controversy over doctrinal matters.

As a large, global church, RCCG has faced pressure to adapt to shifting societal norms.

However, it has consistently maintained its commitment to what it views as unchangeable biblical truths.

The church’s stance on homosexuality has not wavered, and leaders within the RCCG have often highlighted this position publicly.

In recent years, many religious organisations worldwide have faced scrutiny for their handling of moral and ethical issues.

The RCCG’s response to these allegations may serve as a message to its global members, reaffirming its commitment to biblical teachings.

With millions of adherents in Nigeria and branches across several continents, the RCCG is not only a religious organisation but also a powerful social institution.

As such, its decisions often have a wide-reaching impact, influencing the beliefs and actions of its followers.

“RCCG’s values are clear,” one member told Stonix News, preferring to remain anonymous. “The church’s adherence to biblical morality is a big reason why so many people choose to worship here.”

Another member expressed shock and disappointment over the allegations but commended the church’s leadership for acting swiftly.

“The allegations are shocking, but I appreciate that the church is addressing it openly,” she said. “It shows they’re serious about accountability.”

Pastor Akande assured church members that the investigation would be conducted with integrity.

“An impartial and transparent investigation is critical to ensure justice and uphold our values,” he said in the memo.

He also reminded members of the church’s mission, emphasizing that discipline and adherence to moral principles are central to RCCG’s teachings.

This incident has already generated significant public interest, especially as RCCG is seen as a model of conservative Christian values in Nigeria.

This strong stance has won the RCCG both supporters and critics.

In the meantime, RCCG members and observers alike will be watching closely to see how the church handles this issue.
