(ICYMI) Why Tinubu Ordered Release of #EndBadGovernance Minors – Shettima

    Share

Vice-President Kashim Shettima has explained why President Bola Tinubu ordered the release of minors detained during the #EndBadGovernance protests in Nigeria.

The directive comes as a federal high court in Abuja struck out charges against 119 protesters, a significant moment in the ongoing saga surrounding the demonstrations.

Obiora Egwuatu, the presiding judge, dismissed the case after an application from M.D. Abubakar, counsel for the attorney-general of the federation.

In the wake of the court session, Shettima addressed the released protesters, emphasizing the president’s desire to give them a fresh start.

“The president and commander in chief of the armed forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, instructed the release of the suspects on humanitarian grounds,” Shettima said.

This decision comes despite what he referred to as “incontrovertible digital video and photographic evidence” of the actions taken by the protesters, some of which were shared online by the protesters themselves.

Shettima stated that the president, as the “father of the nation,” believes in providing these young men with another chance.

“Who will make a positive impact in a drive for a better Nigeria,” he urged the young men.

He warned them against allowing themselves to be used for violence or destruction of property.

“Over N300 billion was lost in the protests, consisting mainly of private properties and loss of business,” Shettima noted.

He called on the young men to seize this opportunity and become responsible citizens who contribute positively to society.

“I will urge you; I will advise you; you are our children to use the opportunity of the president’s magnanimous gesture,” he said.

These protests were part of a broader movement aimed at addressing systemic issues in Nigeria, including government corruption and poor governance.

The #EndBadGovernance protests sparked widespread debate across the country, with many citizens calling for accountability and transparency from their leaders.

The demonstrations had resulted in significant unrest and, according to Shettima, a substantial economic loss.

In the wake of the protests, the government has faced criticism for its handling of the situation and for the treatment of protesters.

Shettima’s remarks and the president’s decision to release the protesters reflect an attempt to mend relations with the youth of Nigeria.

“This decision is not just about the past; it is about our future,” he said, urging the protesters to reflect on their actions and choices.

The released protesters expressed relief and gratitude for the opportunity to return to their families and communities.

“This is a chance for us to do better,” one young man said, speaking on behalf of the group.

“We understand the importance of this decision, and we will not take it for granted.”

The release of the protesters may pave the way for a new chapter in Nigeria’s ongoing struggle for better governance.
