South-East Bloodshed: Catholic Bishop Warns Killers Will Face Divine Justice

    Share

The Catholic Bishop of Enugu Diocese, Most Rev. Calistus Onaga, has expressed deep concern over the rising violence and politically motivated killings in the South-East region.

He warned that those involved in these heinous acts would face both divine and earthly consequences.

The Bishop delivered this passionate message during a thanksgiving mass to mark an empowerment programme organized by Senator Kelvin Chukwu, representing Enugu East Senatorial District.

The event was held at the Holy Ghost Cathedral in Enugu.

Bishop Onaga lamented the state of insecurity and the bloodshed in the region, describing the situation as tragic and unacceptable.

He particularly condemned the brutal murder of the Labour Party’s senatorial candidate in the 2023 election, Oyibo Chukwu, as well as the assassination of the chairman of Ogbete Market Traders Association, Stephen Aniagu.

“These killings are not only wicked but also unholy,” the Bishop said during his sermon.

He added, “Anyone engaging in such acts will not go unpunished, whether by God or man.”

Taking his sermon from Mark 13:24-32, the Bishop urged Christians to embrace tolerance, forgiveness, and the commandments of God.

He emphasized the fleeting nature of human life, reminding his audience that everyone would eventually face divine judgment.

“So, my dear brothers and sisters, let us always know that one day every one of us will die, and we do not know the hour or day,” he warned.

“This is a Period of Reconciliation”

Bishop Onaga called on the people of the South-East to seek reconciliation and return to God.

“This is a period of reconciliation and going back to God. May God teach us forgiveness. The end will come, and we must be conscious of this,” he stressed.

The Bishop’s message resonated deeply with the audience, which included political and religious leaders from across the region.

The murder of Oyibo Chukwu during the 2023 election campaign remains a sore point for many in Enugu State.

His death paved the way for his younger brother, Kelvin Chukwu, to emerge as senator.

He described the gathering as a testament to democracy and good governance.

“I am here to promote good governance,” Nwoye said.

He added, “We are not here to talk about political parties. I am a member of the APC, and my brother Senator Kelvin Chukwu is a member of the Labour Party. What I have come here to do is to promote good governance.”
