The National Executive Committee (NEC) of Accord has expelled its 2023 presidential candidate, Professor Christopher Imumolen, and seven other prominent members over allegations of anti-party activities.
This decision was made during the NEC meeting held on Wednesday in Abuja.
The announcement was contained in a communiqué signed by the party’s National Chairman, Barrister Maxwell Mgbudem, and National Secretary, Dr. Adebukola A. Ajaja.
“Gross Misconduct and Violations”
The NEC explained that the expulsions followed recommendations from a seven-member disciplinary committee.
The committee investigated allegations of gross misconduct, anti-party activities, and breaches of Accord’s constitution.
“NEC unanimously approved, upheld, and endorsed disciplinary measures against members involved in factionalising the party, bringing it into disrepute, and violating its constitution,” the communiqué read.
High-Profile Expulsions
Among those expelled alongside Professor Imumolen were state chairpersons and former leaders of various states’ party chapters.
The expelled members include:
- Lanre Ogundare, Lagos State Chairman.
- Surajo Ibrahim, Zamfara State Chairman.
- Muktar Abdalla, Borno State Chairman.
- Chief Abiola Samuel Odeoba, former Ekiti State Chairman.
- Dr. Falaye Ajibola, former Ondo State Chairman.
- Dzingina Jacob Ephraim, Nasarawa State Chairman.
- Prince Adebisi Wale Ganiy.
In addition to the expulsions, three members were suspended.
These include Salimu Lawal Boyi (Katsina), Fatima Mohammed Zarumi (Yobe), and Abdullahi Isa Kasowa (Bauchi).
NEC Backs Leadership
The NEC reaffirmed its confidence in the leadership of Barrister Maxwell Mgbudem as National Chairman.
They commended his efforts to rebuild and rebrand the party in preparation for the 2027 general elections.
The communiqué emphasized the need for discipline and unity to ensure the party’s survival and relevance.
“The NEC calls on all members to strictly adhere to the party’s constitution to prevent anarchy and ensure a strong, united front,” the statement noted.
A Crack in Accord’s Ranks
The expulsions highlight growing cracks within Accord, a party that has struggled to remain a significant force in Nigerian politics.
Professor Imumolen, the party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, was a notable figure in Accord.
His expulsion, alongside other key members, signals a serious internal crisis.
“Anti-Party Activities Will Not Be Tolerated”
Speaking about the disciplinary actions, Barrister Mgbudem warned that Accord would not tolerate actions that undermine the party’s unity and reputation.
“Factionalising the party and violating its constitution are serious offenses that threaten our survival,” he stated.
Dr. Ajaja, the National Secretary, reiterated that Accord remains committed to rebuilding its structures and preparing for the future.
“Our focus is on unity, discipline, and rebranding ahead of 2027,” she said.
