The National Examinations Council (NECO) has taken a bold step to expand its presence beyond Nigeria by accrediting more foreign schools to conduct its Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) and Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
This move is part of NECO’s efforts to extend its examination services to students in other countries and enhance the quality of education across Africa.
Foreign Schools Join NECO’s Accredited List
The newly accredited schools are located in Niger Republic and Equatorial Guinea.
They will now join other foreign institutions already authorized to administer NECO examinations.
NECO examinations are currently conducted in Benin Republic, Togo, Côte d’Ivoire, Niger Republic, Equatorial Guinea, and even the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
This development marks a growing recognition of NECO as a trusted examination body beyond Nigeria’s borders.
NECO’s Rigorous Assessment Process
Azeez Sani, Acting Director of Information and Public Relations for NECO, announced the new accreditations in a statement released over the weekend.
He revealed that the schools underwent a thorough evaluation before being approved for accreditation.
“After a thorough evaluation and comprehensive assessment, the schools were granted full SSCE and BECE accreditation status,” Sani said.
This rigorous process ensures that NECO maintains its standards of excellence, even as it expands to new territories.
A Step Towards Global Leadership
According to NECO, accrediting more foreign schools is a testament to its commitment to educational excellence.
Sani described the initiative as part of NECO’s mission to become a leading examination body in Africa.
“With its expanding global presence, NECO is poised to become a leading examination body in Africa, offering opportunities for students worldwide to benefit from its expertise,” Sani stated.
NECO aims to contribute significantly to the advancement of education not just in Africa, but globally.
NECO’s First External Centre
In a related development, NECO revealed that candidates are now sitting for the ongoing SSCE External examination in Diffa, Niger Republic.
The UNHCR School in Diffa has become NECO’s first official SSCE External Centre outside Nigeria.
This milestone highlights NECO’s growing influence and its commitment to reaching students in underserved regions.
An Expanding Global Presence
Over the years, NECO has grown beyond its Nigerian roots to establish examination centres in various countries.
These include nations in West Africa such as Benin Republic, Togo, and Côte d’Ivoire, as well as Equatorial Guinea in Central Africa.
NECO’s reach has even extended to the Middle East, with examination centres in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
This expansion underscores NECO’s ambition to serve as a regional leader in education and assessment.
Commitment to Quality Education
NECO’s expansion into foreign schools aligns with its goal of promoting access to quality education for all.
By accrediting schools in different countries, NECO offers students the opportunity to participate in internationally recognized examinations.
This initiative also strengthens ties between Nigeria and other African countries in the field of education.
What This Means for Students
Students in these accredited schools will now have access to NECO’s standardized examinations.
This opens doors to further education and career opportunities, as NECO certificates are widely recognized across Nigeria and beyond.
It also provides a level playing field for students in these countries to compete with their peers globally.
NECO’s Growing Reputation
NECO’s efforts to maintain high standards in its examinations have earned it a reputation as one of Africa’s leading examination bodies.
The latest accreditation of schools in Niger Republic and Equatorial Guinea is a reflection of this growing trust.
Sani emphasized that NECO remains committed to its vision of driving educational excellence across the continent.
