Lagosians are set for a traffic shake-up as the state government announced a major road closure for the 2024 Youth Christmas Parade.
Ajose Adeogun Street in Victoria Island will be closed to motorists on Sunday, December 8, from 6:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
This closure is expected to cause significant disruptions, prompting authorities to issue a stern warning to road users.
The Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, disclosed this development in a statement on Monday.
He urged motorists to follow alternative routes and remain patient throughout the diversion.
“The road closure is necessary to ensure the safety of participants and the smooth execution of the Christmas Youth Parade,” Osiyemi said.
Alternative Routes for Motorists
Motorists heading to Eko Hotel Roundabout from VCP Hotel will face immediate diversions.
According to the commissioner, drivers will need to use Jubril Martins Street, turn right onto Muri Okunola Street, and connect through Ligali Ayorinde Street.
From there, they can link up with Bishop Aboyade Cole Street and Tokunbo Ademola Street to reach their destinations.
For those traveling from Ligali Ayorinde Street to Eko Hotel Roundabout, a similar diversion will apply.
Vehicles will be redirected to Bishop Aboyade Cole Street, then Adetokunbo Ademola Street, to continue their journeys.
Ajose Adeogun-bound motorists from Eko Hotel Roundabout will also have to make detours.
They will be directed to Adetokunbo Ademola Street, turn onto Bishop Aboyade Cole Street, and connect Muri Okunola Street before reaching Jubril Martins Street.
These changes aim to minimize congestion and ensure a smooth traffic flow.
LASTMA Officers Deployed
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) will be on the ground to manage the situation.
Osiyemi assured the public that LASTMA officers would enforce order and direct traffic.
“We understand the inconvenience this may cause, but we are committed to making the experience stress-free,” he said.
Motorists were also advised to plan their journeys ahead of time to avoid unnecessary delays.
A Parade Like No Other
The Christmas Youth Parade is a highlight of Lagos’ festive calendar.
Ajose Adeogun Street, known for its spectacular Christmas decorations, will host thousands of youths.
The event promises music, dance, and cultural displays that celebrate the holiday spirit.
Residents and visitors alike are excited about the festivities.
Despite the mixed reactions, the government insists that the closure is unavoidable.
Osiyemi appealed to Lagosians to show understanding and cooperate with traffic officials.
“This is a temporary inconvenience for a greater good,” he added.
He emphasized that safety and security remain the government’s top priority.
Past Experiences with Road Closures
Lagos is no stranger to road closures for major events.
From marathons to cultural festivals, residents have grown accustomed to diversions.
However, the Christmas parade draws more attention due to its scale and significance.
In previous years, the event attracted thousands of spectators and created a carnival-like atmosphere.
The government’s proactive traffic management efforts have helped minimize chaos during such events.
Preparations in Full Swing
Preparations for the parade are already underway.
Organizers are working closely with security agencies to ensure a safe and memorable experience.
Emergency response teams will also be on standby in case of any incidents.
The state government is calling on residents to embrace the festive spirit and cooperate fully.
“Let’s come together to celebrate the season,” Osiyemi concluded.
