Dangote Refinery Makes History with First Petrol Export to Cameroon

    Share

The Dangote Refinery has achieved a historic milestone by commencing the export of premium motor spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, to Cameroon.

This marks the first-ever export of petroleum products from Africa’s largest oil refinery, located in Nigeria, to a neighboring country.

The achievement was made possible through a strategic partnership with Neptune Oil, a leading energy company in Cameroon.

This collaboration underscores the commitment of both companies to strengthening economic ties within the region and addressing Africa’s growing energy demands.

“This first export of PMS to Cameroon is a tangible demonstration of our vision for a united and energy-independent Africa,” said Alhaji Aliko Dangote, President and CEO of the Dangote Group.

He added, “With this development, we are laying the foundation for a future where African resources are refined and exchanged within the continent for the benefit of our people.”

The landmark transaction reflects the potential of the Dangote Refinery to transform Africa’s energy landscape by reducing dependence on foreign imports and fostering regional trade.

Neptune Oil’s Director, Antoine Ndzengue, hailed the partnership as a game-changer for Cameroon.

“By becoming the first importer of petroleum products from this world-class refinery, we are bolstering our country’s energy security and supporting local economic development,” Ndzengue said.

He emphasized the significance of the deal, noting that the initial supply was executed without international intermediaries.

“This reflects our commitment to serving our markets independently and efficiently,” Ndzengue explained.

The Dangote Refinery, which began operations earlier this year, has been touted as a major step toward achieving energy independence for Nigeria and its neighbors.

Built with a refining capacity of 650,000 barrels per day, it is the largest single-train refinery in the world.

Its advanced infrastructure enables the production of high-quality petroleum products, including PMS, diesel, and aviation fuel, for both domestic use and export.

The refinery’s ability to supply petroleum products to other African nations positions it as a key player in reducing the continent’s reliance on imported fuel.

The partnership between Dangote Refinery and Neptune Oil aims to establish a sustainable supply chain that benefits both countries.

In a statement, Dangote Refinery revealed plans to explore new initiatives with Neptune Oil to stabilize fuel prices and create economic opportunities in the region.

“This collaboration is just the beginning,” the statement read.

“Both companies are committed to creating a reliable supply chain that will drive economic growth and energy stability across West and Central Africa.”

Cameroon, like many African nations, has faced challenges in securing a stable supply of refined petroleum products.

The reliance on imports from outside the continent has often resulted in high costs and vulnerability to global market fluctuations.

The recent export of PMS from Dangote Refinery to Cameroon is expected to ease some of these challenges while fostering regional cooperation.

Experts have praised the development, highlighting its potential to transform Africa’s energy market.

“This is a significant step for Africa,” said energy analyst Dr. Tunde Ajayi.

“By trading refined products within the continent, we are not only improving energy security but also keeping wealth within Africa.”

The move also aligns with the African Union’s vision of increased intra-African trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

By leveraging its world-class refining capacity, the Dangote Refinery is poised to play a pivotal role in achieving this goal.

Beyond economic benefits, the partnership with Neptune Oil is expected to enhance the refinery’s reputation as a trusted supplier of petroleum products.

“This milestone highlights the potential of African businesses to collaborate and lead the charge toward economic independence,” Ajayi added.

The Dangote Refinery’s foray into international exports represents a bold step in fulfilling its mission of transforming the continent’s energy sector.

As the refinery continues to expand its operations, its impact on the region is expected to grow, benefiting millions across Africa.
