Rep. Mohammed El-Rufai, son of former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai, has taken a surprising step by publicly commending his father’s political adversary, Comrade Shehu Sani.
Mohammed, speaking at a National Assembly event in Abuja, acknowledged Sani’s contributions to Nigeria’s democratic journey.
The event, organized by the National Assembly Legislative Forum (NASSLAF), was themed “Role of Legislative Aides in National Development.”
In his speech, Mohammed called Shehu Sani a “father” and lauded his unwavering dedication to the welfare of Nigerians.
“Regardless of the politics between him and my father,” Mohammed said, “even Sen. Shehu Sani’s enemies cannot deny his consistent advocacy for workers’ rights and democracy.”
He also praised other Nigerian patriots, including the late Gani Fawehinmi and human rights lawyer Femi Falana.
Politics Set Aside for Democracy
The younger El-Rufai’s remarks come as a rare gesture of reconciliation in the often fractious world of Nigerian politics.
For years, Nasir El-Rufai and Shehu Sani were locked in political battles during the latter’s time as senator representing Kaduna Central.
Despite this, Mohammed acknowledged Sani’s pivotal role alongside his mentor, Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State, in championing democracy.
“I am glad that Shehu Sani has been invited here,” Mohammed said, emphasizing the need to recognize individuals who have shaped Nigeria’s democratic evolution.
Advocacy for Legislative Aides
Mohammed also turned his focus to the importance of legislative aides in strengthening Nigeria’s democracy.
He urged lawmakers to take the roles of their aides seriously, describing them as the backbone of effective legislative work.
“Shehu Sani and Uba Sani have demonstrated this by ensuring their aides deliver the dividends of democracy to the people,” he said.
The lawmaker pledged to follow their example by empowering his aides to serve his Kaduna North Federal Constituency effectively.
Shehu Sani Responds with Commendation
Shehu Sani, who was the keynote speaker at the event, reciprocated the gesture with praise for Mohammed’s representation in Kaduna North.
Sani highlighted the critical role of legislative aides, describing them as essential to effective governance.
“Legislative aides must always tell their principals the truth about the real issues affecting the country,” Sani said.
He warned against a subservient legislature, saying it would undermine democracy and hinder good governance.
“In our time, heads of MDAs could not ignore our summons,” Sani said, reflecting on the importance of legislative independence.
Calls for Accountability and Good Governance
Sani’s speech also included a call for lawmakers to prioritize national interest over personal gains.
“A legislature that fails to hold the executive accountable fails the people it represents,” he said.
He urged lawmakers to resist external pressures that could compromise their responsibilities.
