A fake Nigerian Army officer, Austin Anthony, has been arrested for allegedly masterminding a specialised car theft syndicate operating across Nigeria and neighboring countries.

According to the commissioner, the suspect was caught driving a stolen vehicle when he was stopped at the checkpoint.

“Anthony presented himself as a military officer to deceive the police and escape with the vehicle,” Musa disclosed through the command’s spokesperson, Ahmad Rufa’i.

Further investigations exposed the full extent of Anthony’s activities.

The police discovered a set of army uniforms with the rank of Major, a forged Nigerian Army identity card, and other military items in his possession.

A Well-Orchestrated Syndicate

Anthony’s arrest led to the apprehension of a gang member, Mansur Abubakar, 32, at the Gidan Dare area in Sokoto metropolis.

The police recovered multiple stolen vehicles and incriminating items from both suspects.

Recovered items included fabricated master keys, five bunches of vehicle keys, three sets of vehicle license plates, and banners of the Nigerian Army.

Police also found army stamps and shoulder badges used by Anthony to bolster his fake military identity.

Commissioner Musa disclosed that Anthony was no stranger to the law.

He had been arrested earlier for a similar crime involving three stolen vehicles.

The suspect was arraigned in court on August 28 but was granted bail.

“Despite being on court bail, Anthony returned to his criminal ways, showing that he is an unrepentant offender,” Musa said.

This time, the police are determined to ensure Anthony and his gang face the full weight of the law.

The commissioner assured that investigations are ongoing, and all fleeing members of the syndicate will be apprehended.

Community Cooperation Key to Success

Musa commended the public for their support and urged them to remain vigilant and provide useful information about suspicious activities.

“The harmonious relationship between the police and the community is critical in dismantling criminal gangs and ensuring public safety,” he said.

He encouraged residents to continue their cooperation and stay law-abiding as the police intensify efforts to rid the state of violent crime.

The Syndicate’s Modus Operandi

Anthony’s car theft syndicate operated with precision and daring.

Using his fake military rank, Anthony gained the trust of security personnel and avoided suspicion during his operations.

The gang allegedly stole vehicles from various locations and used fabricated keys and falsified documents to cover their tracks.

One resident, reacting to the arrest, expressed relief at the breakthrough.

“This is a big step in ensuring our safety. We hope the police bring all those involved to justice,” the resident said.

Police Commitment to Justice

The Sokoto Police Command has vowed to maintain its aggressive stance against criminals in the state.

“The command is committed to apprehending all fleeing suspects and ensuring they are prosecuted,” Musa reiterated.

He added that the police will continue to prioritize the safety and security of Sokoto State’s residents.
