As the festive season draws near, Lagos State is taking extra measures to ensure smooth and stress-free travel for residents and visitors. The state government has directed the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) to intensify its efforts in managing traffic, particularly at night, in key areas across the city.
In response, more than 2,500 LASTMA officers have been mobilised to monitor traffic and address issues that could disrupt the flow of vehicles and pedestrians. The initiative is aimed at preventing congestion and ensuring that road users can move freely before, during, and after the Yuletide season.
Efforts to Ensure Smooth Traffic Flow
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s directive to LASTMA underscores the state’s commitment to maintaining a safe and efficient transportation system during the busiest period of the year. According to Mr. Sola Giwa, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, this action is designed to ensure that traffic remains unobstructed, especially in areas that experience high volumes of vehicles and people during the festive period.
The key areas identified for enhanced traffic monitoring include Ikoyi, Lekki, Victoria Island, and Ajah. These locations are known for heavy traffic congestion, and the increased presence of traffic officers will help maintain order and prevent disruptions.
“The governor’s directive prioritises the immediate clearance of obstructions and incidents that can disrupt vehicular and pedestrian movement,” said Giwa. “This action reflects the administration’s ongoing commitment to facilitating a safe and efficient transportation system for all during the festive season.”
LASTMA’s Action Plan
The officers mobilised for this task are equipped with state-of-the-art traffic management tools to ensure the effectiveness of the operation. These tools include heavy-duty and mini towing vehicles, which will be strategically deployed across the state to key locations that are prone to traffic bottlenecks.
LASTMA’s General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed confidence in the readiness of the agency to tackle any traffic-related challenges that might arise during the holiday period.
“Our personnel are fully equipped and strategically positioned to address any traffic challenges promptly,” Bakare-Oki said. “This initiative aligns with the governor’s vision of a Lagos where mobility remains unhindered.”
Strategic Deployment of Officers
LASTMA officers will be on round-the-clock patrol, monitoring traffic flow in areas such as Ikoyi, Obalende, Victoria Island, and the Lekki-Ajah axis, all of which are historically prone to heavy traffic. By having officers available at all hours, the agency hopes to intervene swiftly and resolve any incidents that might cause delays.
“We are ensuring that Lagosians enjoy seamless mobility before, during, and after the holiday season,” Bakare-Oki added. “This proactive intervention will make sure that the festive period is as enjoyable and stress-free as possible for everyone.”
Public Cooperation Key to Success
While the presence of 2,500 officers will undoubtedly have a significant impact on traffic management, Bakare-Oki urged residents to cooperate with the traffic managers and adhere to traffic regulations to help maintain smooth operations.
“We urge the public to be patient and follow the instructions of our officers,” he said. “Cooperation is key to ensuring that the road network remains clear and that all drivers and pedestrians can move about without delays.”
Bakare-Oki also reassured Lagosians that LASTMA is dedicated to maintaining order on the roads throughout the festive season and beyond. The agency’s officers will provide timely assistance to road users, ensuring that any traffic-related issues are swiftly addressed.
A Strong Commitment to Efficient Transportation
This enhanced traffic monitoring initiative is a clear demonstration of the Lagos State Government’s commitment to improving the city’s traffic management system. It comes at a time when traffic congestion and accidents are common during the Yuletide, as more people travel for the holidays, increasing the volume of vehicles on the road.
“By deploying more officers and providing them with the necessary tools, we are confident that Lagos residents will have a smoother and more pleasant journey during this busy period,” Giwa said.
The public is also encouraged to report any urgent traffic issues to LASTMA through their toll-free hotline at 080000527862. This line is available for residents to report incidents and receive immediate assistance from traffic officers.
LASTMA’s Ongoing Commitment to Public Safety
This initiative not only aims to reduce the usual traffic jams but also highlights the importance of maintaining public safety during the busiest time of the year. The state government’s ongoing efforts to improve Lagos’ road infrastructure and traffic management systems are evident in the mobilisation of resources for this yuletide intervention.
By ensuring that traffic disruptions are swiftly dealt with, LASTMA hopes to create a safer and more efficient environment for all road users during the holiday season. With the deployment of more than 2,500 officers, Lagosians can expect a more organised traffic flow, reduced delays, and a generally more pleasant experience on the roads.
