A Nigerian man, Chinedu Stanley Asuzu, brother of the late Nollywood actor Ernest Asuzu, has been gunned down under suspicious circumstances in Johannesburg, South Africa. The shocking incident, which has left the Nigerian community in South Africa reeling, occurred on December 16, 2024.
Chinedu, a father of four, was reportedly at his residence in Johannesburg South when armed assailants stormed his home and shot him dead. The Nigerian Union South Africa (NUSA) confirmed the tragedy in a statement released on Monday, December 22, condemning the murder and urging South African authorities to ensure justice is served.
Family Torn Apart by Violence
The death of Chinedu Asuzu comes amidst a turbulent divorce battle with his estranged South African wife, Busisiwe Sibanyoni. The couple had been embroiled in disputes over finances and assets, with allegations that Busisiwe had control over Chinedu’s properties and accounts due to legal technicalities surrounding his residency status.
According to a close friend, identified as Mr. Ade, Chinedu had transferred his financial assets into his wife’s name while waiting for his residential permit. “Everything he owned was in her name,” Ade alleged in a video shared online. “He trusted her, but she allegedly misused his money, leading to their separation.”
Ade further claimed that Busisiwe was the last person to speak with Chinedu before his murder. She had reportedly called him on the day of the incident, insisting on picking up their children despite it being his designated time with them. Shortly after her visit, armed men stormed the house and fatally shot Chinedu.
Suspicions Deepen Over the Corpse
Adding another layer of controversy, Chinedu’s estranged wife has reportedly refused to release his body to his family. Mr. Ade accused Busisiwe of holding on to the corpse, allegedly fearing that the Asuzu family might perform “voodoo rituals” to uncover the truth behind the murder.
“Busisiwe’s friend told me she believes the family would use the corpse to seek vengeance from beyond,” Ade said in his appeal to the Nigerian embassy. “This is causing unimaginable pain to the family. They just want to bury their son in peace.”
In response, the Nigerian Union South Africa has pledged its support to the Asuzu family. “We are providing comprehensive assistance and are in close communication with the South African police,” NUSA’s National Publicity Secretary, Akindele Olunloyo, stated. “A murder investigation has been launched, and we demand justice for Chinedu.”
Murder Investigation Underway
According to NUSA, a witness at the scene has provided details to the investigating officer, confirming that the case is being treated as a murder. However, attempts to reach Busisiwe for comments have been unsuccessful. Calls and messages sent to her phone have gone unanswered, further fueling speculation about her involvement.
NUSA President-General Hon. Smart Nwobi emphasized the need for caution and unity among Nigerians living in South Africa. “We strongly condemn this heinous act of violence and urge our community to remain vigilant. It’s heartbreaking to see another Nigerian life lost in such a senseless manner.”
A History of Tragedy
The Asuzu family has faced repeated heartbreak. Chinedu’s death comes just years after the loss of his older brother, Ernest Asuzu, a beloved Nollywood actor known for his roles in classic Nigerian films. Ernest passed away in 2021 after battling a prolonged illness.
This latest tragedy has reignited concerns over the safety of Nigerians in South Africa, where violent attacks targeting foreign nationals have been a recurring issue.
